We risk confusing people if we say that "there is no algorithm on Mastodon". Mastodon software *is* a bunch of algorithms [1]. Otherwise, it wouldn't be software.
What is meant is that people have a lot more control over the algorithms. Choosing to not see a follower's boosts is one way to modify the algorithm.
