Is anyone working on a Facebook-style alternative for the Fediverse, so that people would have a clear path to move from FB to Fedi?

I know there's Friendica, but that seems to be more focused on compatibility with multiple networks rather than welcoming newbies.

(Wonder if it could be done by forking Mastodon to have long form posts, photo albums etc? Not a dev so apologies if this is a bad idea 😁 )

@FediFollows had a look the other day afaict it doesn't really exist yet. People say Friendica, Hubzilla, Zap etc, but none of them really do Facebook-like groups (which is what an alternative for is needed imho). The best #selfhosting #opensource thing I found was humhub.com/ but that's not part of the #fediverse. It looks like @grishka's #smithereen project is headed in the right direction though, see e.g. mastodon.social/@grishka/10570

@jdaviescoates @FediFollows there will be forum-like discussions in Smithereen groups at some point.

What is a Facebook-like group and how it isn't already covered by #zot forums?

A group with a wall and a discussion board where you can create topics. Maybe also with photo albums. VK actually allows you to enable and disable these sections in the group management UI.

There's also an event variation of the same thing — it has start/end time and the ability to join tentatively. Discussions and photo albums work great in those too.

(these CWs are so annoying)

That's covered with boards. What else?

@jdaviescoates @grishka Have you looked at Misskey? It has groups and channels, might be what you're looking for.

@ray @jdaviescoates

uh, it has groups?

Ray
@grishka @jdaviescoates In my last romp through Misskey I saw it had groups and channels, I didn't dig further so you may want to do a deep dive and see if it suits you. https://join.misskey.page/en/

I do have an account on misskey.io, I do see groups under "more", but I couldn't figure out how to use them.

Ray
@grishka @jdaviescoates Yeah it is a little confusing. Did you try their Channels feature? It might be more what you're looking for.

@ray @jdaviescoates

That's more like it. But they seem to not be federated — all posts are forced to be local-only, and trying to get the AP object for a channel returns HTML.

@grishka @ray @jdaviescoates That might be a feature, to encourage local-only channels. It's one reason I seriously considered misskey for our server, rather than Pleroma.
Ray
@RazorsKiss @grishka @jdaviescoates BTW I was looking for local only posting in Pleroma and I saw in GitHub it may be coming in version 3. I think it will be very useful in some cases.

idk, I've never really understood this whole "instance = community" thing. The whole premise of the fediverse is that you're able participate anywhere, regardless of which instance hosts your account. Local-only posts break this — it now suddenly matters where your account is.
