Not every Mastodon instance is a non-profit or run by volunteers.
Two examples of instances run by for-profit entities are:
* twit.social
* mastodon.cloud
Both instances are transparent about this.

The question about monetization is incredibly important when funding a Mastodon instance. Therefore, it's important to consider how they get their funding. For example: * mastodon.social is run by a non-profit Ask the instance admins about how they acquire their funding. One more note: if a person saying "Don't donate to a non-profit" is running a for-profit instance, take their advice with a heaping tablespoon of salt. |
Some folks are saying, "Donate to your instance."
That's fine if donations are the only way they're able to continue operating.
But don't assume that every instance needs donations. Especially if they're run by for-profit entities.
