I can't help but notice many toots from helpful newbies encouraging you to support the Mastodon Patreon.

It's fine to do that but understand it goes to just two big instances and the official Mastodon dev team.

It does NOT trickle down to YOUR instance. If you want to support your server, donate to it directly. Nearly all the costs of the explosive growth of the past few weeks is borne by local instances.

Mastodon is decentralized. There is no Mastodon Inc. This is not Twitter.

Anyone else having these weird replacements for characters/graphics? Any advice on how to fix?

...I think you have to turn off adblockers I think it works now.πŸ˜‚

@leo If there is a way to do this, say to Vivaldi Social, I can't find it. Not good for a platform that apparently depends upon donations.

@leo Today I listened to OnTheMedia about Mastodon and it was helpful to get a better grasp of how it works etc. Still learning as it's different from twitter. I won't give up. My question though is how do you find the local patreon? I feel like I'm still missing things. Is there a video or something that explains things. Is it the Federated button. Will explore that after writing. (That would make sense.) Thanks!

Nicolas Pettiaux

@leo this is indeed very important to remind everywhere

Filipe

@leo I donate to patreon because of the Dev team only. I suppose they're the ones pushing hard for improvements in the implementation and protocol, right?

ikeacurtains

@leo I recommend a monthly #CoffeeDonation to both. We need the Mastodon devs just as much as we need local server operators.

Rocketroom

@leo Support both! In fact do try and support all the Open Source projects you know and love. And by the way... a little goes a long way. A reoccurring donation of $1 per month can make an astounding difference, because that lets developers budget time and money more accurately. :ablobdj:

@leo There's an active debate about this, but I side with you. The Patreon supports the people who do the core work on the code, and I would like to support that, but it's also supporting specific servers that some instances are defederating from. If they split the support, I'd be happy to pay into development, but to my knowledge, they have not. I do support my home instance, though!

LoveThyNeighbor

@leo Leo, is Steve Gibson or GRC on Mastodon?

David J. Loehr

@JeffLieber @leo If I'm not mistaken, mastodon.social is one of the two big instances. I'm on that as well. If we were on one of the smaller ones, like twit.social or wandering.shop et al, then we'd need to find how to donate to them.

Daniel Fisher

@JeffLieber @leo Go to your instances domain about page. The owner/admin will be listed there. If there's not obvious info about contributing, you can message or email.

Daniel Fisher

@JeffLieber @leo Wait, you're on mastodon.social. The Mastodon patreon is who you'd contribute to for you. πŸ˜€

@leo >This is not Twitter.

Well not with that attitude.

@leo

I wish someone would grab a megaphone and say "THIS IS NOT TWITTER" for like an hour straight.

I'm seeing so much Twitter behavior out there, and it's a bit distressing.

Lots of hot takes, not a CW in sight, tons of heavy media usage without thinking of the cost to the instance owners who run things out of kindness.

Dear God, corporate social media has turned us into thoughtless wildebeests. πŸ˜“

@RL_Dane @leo 🌢️ You have to expect a bumpy ride on a shake down cruise. To be completely honest, that’s an unreasonable expectation to have for the general population. This is an opportunity that will improve the platform and it’s up to devs and admins to step up and make good on the marketing. I hope someone is working on a long term moderation strategy because you are absolutely correct, it’s a bit Wild West out here. Tho currently quite wholesome in my experience.

R. L. Dane :debian: :openbsd:

@nikig @leo

You're right. I'm just hoping that the beautiful community we've built so far doesn't get railroaded by twitterisms. :D

I'm glad they're here, though. I just wish they'd listen to the veterans a bit more (not counting myself in that, I'm just a first-waver (late April)) :)

@leo Mastodon search does not work for me. I can’t find anything or anyone

Jack O. Lantern

@leo I got banned for a monkey emoji. 😎

G. Bailey-Mershon

@leo can you give us newbies an idea how to donate to our instances? I’m still finding my way on here.

amine

@leo @paulgp where should we donate for the econtwitter mastodon server? You are super entrepreneurial but I’m worried about the responsibility you’ve taken on your shoulders πŸ˜€.

Paul Goldsmith-Pinkham

@amine yea I need a figure something out although unfortunately I discovered today that donations may open me up to GDPR liability

David Birney

@leo Thanks for that Leo. Absolutely supporting your local instance is the best idea. Certainly not giving my money to Musk.

LinaB

@leo are " instancers" developers???

EddieTX14

@leo I will donate. Thank you server hosts for your hard work.

Biden Fan πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ (he/him)

@leo how do you donate to your local server? Sorry for the dumb question but am a newbie here.

Christian D. Helfrich

@leo Thanks very much for letting folks know. How do I find my local instance and donate to them? Thanks!
Christian

Jacob Gonzales πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

@leo ultimately if your an developer #mastodon is open source, so if you want to contribute your time here’s the GitHub

github.com/mastodon/mastodon

Carmela πŸ‰πŸ”»

@leo it will help even smaller instances. Because it helps the software developers of mastodon too which the other servers use. At least this is how I’m seeing it

Amy Taylor

@leo

Thanks! Now signed up to support the instance I'm on.

Much obliged.

cbn2

@leo For those who'd like to help their server, often the donation area can be found in the lower left corner of Home (beneath "Publish!"), in "About" next to the specific server/instance name.

Lee

@leo Whaaa, you mean trickle down economics doesn't work in real life OR Mastodon???

Allison O

@leo
So, give us the address for Mastodon.nz and we will. Wish I'd known that before I donated to the big 'Un. πŸ™„

GLW

@leo
Thanks for the explanation. Explain how to support local instance, and then we can do better.

Allen Taylor 9591

@leo Great ty, I left Twitter because of Musk.

anubis2814
@scottlandau64 @leo Go to your about page on your instances and most likely there will be donation options
Math Lover

Hint: If you click on "announcements" (the megaphone icon on your Home timeline) you will generally see how to support your local server. Please consider a monthly donation.

Fanua 🌐

@AmerLiberal It also announces when the server is down or overloaded.
