Another tip for fediverse admins: a lot of software (including Mastodon, at least v3, not sure about v4) lets you completely turn off trending posts/hashtags/news/recommendations for your users. Our "Explore" page is just 4 tabs of glorious blankness.

Obviously talk to your community before doing this. We were massively in favor of it, so I did it. We've had them turned off for years. It's been nice

A screenshot of a page that says "Explore" at the top, with tabs for Posts, Hashtags, News, and "For You". The screen is mostly blank except for a notice that says "Nothing is trending right now. Check back later!"

In Mastodon v3, and #Hometown, an admin can do this by going to Administration -> Site Settings -> Trends and unchecking the little box next to "Trends". Your server will still track trends but they'll be gated by moderation actions. If you never take those actions... no trends

Oggi continuo a taggarvi: @ed, @kenobit

Se le funzionalità di Mastodon che evidenziano i post in tendenza vi danno ancora fastidio, vi segnalo che è apparentemente possibile disattivarle a livello di istanza.

@darius Great idea. Clicking Twitter trends has had a negative impact on my image of humanity and mental health…

@aanand I should probably change the text to indicate that it's purposeful

@darius Unpopular opinion: I really feel that my timeline misses an algorithm. There are is great content I am missing simply because I am not online when it gets posted, then it gets flooded by many other posts and I could never stumble upon it again…

I really do not know.

@darius it would be cooler if those tabs were filled with cross-server awesomeness - is that an option? Discoverability of interesting content is very difficult depending on your server & can feel silo'd

Not sure on how easy it is to make a trending/new/interesting feed of content from various servers - even if it's a preselected list of sister servers that share a common niche/topic
