@pixelfed Just like others I'm new to Mastodon. Decided to run my own instance. Surprised to find that I can't see any data my server knows nothing about, like replies on other servers. Any advice?

@moni @pixelfed another single user instance n00b here. I've been reading/searching/following on mastodon.social and after copy/paste into my instance I find I get a timeline that works locally.

@vrsimility @pixelfed Hey I see a reply! Yeah I'm following users on other servers but when I go to their timeline I see posts, but zero replies.

@moni @pixelfed my guess is it's intended; idk why but could be for privacy, cultural or performance reasons.

Of course you can also get follows from directories though I haven't used them much as yet.
