Ok, who has time and a budget to help me put captions on a documentary I made? Year ago indie scholar and sexworker Rebelle Cunt and I put our coins together and made a likkle documentary on Black sex work We had no budget but mutual respect for each other. I would like proper captions instead of generated ones and also descriptions idk how to even tag this but pls boost so I can see what my options are 36 comments
@djsundog @CaribenxMarciaX @ajroach42 I also know of a couple of good ones but Marcia said no generated ones. :x @eloisa @djsundog @ajroach42 i say tht bc someone said that generated ones were no good when the film first premiered so i thought it best not to use them...  @CaribenxMarciaX @eloisa @ajroach42 I think that's what Andrew found as well, but this one gets you to 80-90% good quickly and allows you to fine-tune the output captions manually to get it to the quality/accuracy you desire. @djsundog @CaribenxMarciaX @eloisa @ajroach42 Yeah, I've been doing a ton of automatic transcriptions using Whisper (the tool Sundog is talking about) for a variety of videos in the Internet Archive as part of a test run of them. They're not perfect (especially with some names), but they are an excellent starting point, and very fast (and effectively free) to generate. If you want to give it a try, you can throw me a video file link and I'll happily send you some subtitle files.  @djsundog @CaribenxMarciaX @eloisa We're using Whisper as a base for generating subtitles, and then cleaning them up by hand in subtitle composer. @Ethancdavenport is doing the majority of the manual work in cleanup. Whisper's auto gen is pretty good, it's not perfect, but it takes generating subtitles from a multi-day thing down to a few hours for us. I'll also boost it up in case anyone has better ideas. @CaribenxMarciaX @djsundog @ajroach42 ok, in that case, I personally found both capcut and autocap good enough, so I then just clean up a bit afterwards, dunno if it's the same tools that aj knows of, but using these may help, maybe? I'm assuming you used the ones from youtube, and those suck a lot, indeed. @maiakbc whew! not grant at all i do most thinks in the diy punk spirit 'aye you know how to do a thing? bet, here's some coin' BUT these are good advice! thank you! @CaribenxMarciaX I think you could DEFINITELY get grant money for this. I'm not a grant writer but I know a good bet when I see one. @CaribenxMarciaX this is the top level site in the United States (by way of example), but there a lot of smaller and more regional ones depending on where you are. https://www.arts.gov/grants @CaribenxMarciaX another thought is that with a grant, comes automatic press and publicity which would be great for this documentary. Others do the promo because they want to amplify their grant winners. So it’s more leg work up front, but worth it in the long run. If not for this project then maybe the next one.  @CaribenxMarciaX if you found someone to make them in English, poke me as I can translate them in French (I would to a first pass then ask a friend of mine who works as a professional subtitles translator to check if my work is well done before giving you the fr subtitles) @CaribenxMarciaX I find editing the auto generated ones on YouTube makes it a lot quicker and easier, plus free. @MissLexisaurus id love to atm, but i dont have the time or the mental capacity right now @CaribenxMarciaX I can def do CC in premiere pro but just a lil rusty as i havent touched it for a few years. Dont think things will have radically changed tho. @siege captions are good now, i need audio descriptions next! than k you though!! @CaribenxMarciaX @CaribenxMarciaX I've used rev.com in the past if you want a real person doing the cpations. They'll send you back a file with timestamps and you can merge it with your video file  @CaribenxMarciaX here is what the task will take, if it will help you nail down what tasks someone will need to do: you don't necessarily have to find someone who knows captioning. you're just looking for a script that you can feed into a caption program as a text file all you need is a screener of your documentary that has the time stamp running over top of the video so the person writing the captions can time them properly using an AV @CaribenxMarciaX also i can do this for you because i've transcribed video before and also i used to be a full service sex worker haha @CaribenxMarciaX I am sure that I already saw an account introduction from someone working in #Caption writing... they are out there... #Captioning |

@CaribenxMarciaX my good friend @ajroach42 has been using a tool that does a lot of the upfront work for you so you only need to clean it up a bit but I don't remember the name of the tool this early in my day haha
