European Commission

Have you ever needed to send money to someone urgently? 💸

Our new proposal aims to make payments in euros instant for anyone with a bank account in any EU or EEA country, at no extra cost compared to a regular money transfer.

The switch from "next day transfers" to "transfers in ten seconds" is comparable to the switch from mail to email.

More info: ec.europa.eu/instant-payments

A meme featuring two fictional characters from the Star Wars saga: Anakin and Padme. Anakin says: "I have just sent you a transfer", to which Padme happily replies: "Great, so I get it now, right?"

Anakin doesn't answer and only stares blankly at Padme. Padme insists, hesitantly: "Right?"

@EU_Commission The EU is posting memes on Mastodon, with alt text, and life is good 😁

Carsten Exil-Hesse In Bahrain

@grin @EU_Commission The expectation is that cost would not be more or just minimal, like it is for Immediate payments within the member states already.

Why is the EU commission getting involved with payment processing? Will I still be able to receive payments if I say the n word?
juliette 🌻

@EU_Commission how will that work for money transfers within EU, but involving a country not using the euro?

John Looney

@juliette @EU_Commission Banks can still use the excuse of currency clearing to slow non-euro transfers. Fast / cheap cash transfers were one of the original promises of the euro project. One more reason for people in non-euro using countries to mention it to their politicians. :-)

@bigvalen @EU_Commission i wish! as a non-dane in Denmark, they don't really care what I think...

Uriel Fanelli

@juliette@mastodon.green @EU_Commission@social.network.europa.eu a normal computer can execute a division on floating numbers in a few nanoseconds.

hicksy2

@EU_Commission I never knew those two were doing that sort of thing!

@EU_Commission International transfers in seconds sounds super scary. How will banks be able to intercept fraudulent transfers if they can jump through several countries in minutes?

elzapp 🇳🇴🐧☁️

@seeder @EU_Commission
I wish I were. I really hope this turns out well. But I still think it sounds super scary.

Joe Seeder

@elzapp @EU_Commission well FYI, there are already quite a few instant systems, like that, and no sky has fallen

@julieleygibbs @EU_Commission

N26 and Revolut are your friend - both support instant payments

As does the Sabadell App for a Spanish mainstream

Rob Synnott

@julieleygibbs @EU_Commission UK? In practice, SEPA Instant will be (or is, it's not actually new but there is a movement to make it mandatory) largely only applicable to the Eurozone, so even without Brexit this wouldn't have been super-useful to UK consumers (though it would be useful to UK businesses).

Image captions make memes accessible to people who, for example, haven't watched Star Wars.

@EU_Commission Post z memem od Komisji Europejskiej, na Mastodonie prowadzonym przez Unię Europejską. Fiu fiu, świat się zmienia i odkrywa Open Source :)

@EU_Commission hmm, would it be like Brazil's PIX protocol? o.o

Eduardo

@EU_Commission is this account "official" ??
I don't see a blue tick !!! :anidab_left:

the_whip

@EU_Commission Ah yes, the EU. I remember being in that, back in the good old days.

@EU_Commission We have something like this out of the banking system, called Crypto.. Much cheaper then fiat transfers. As an expat in central Europe and coming from a western European country I need to sent or get sometimes money and belief me

1. its not in seconds.
2. the fees are not cheap.

But hey! great meme!!

Uriel Fanelli

@RandyDandy@fosstodon.org @EU_Commission@social.network.europa.eu

crypto requires commissions too, requires mining, unless you have PoS , and is not instant as you say.... stop selling crypto scam .

sab

@RandyDandy @EU_Commission That transfers are not cheap and not instant is exactly the issue the Commission is seeking to adress with this proposal, they're not claiming that his is currently the case.

Indeed traditional banking is technologically lagging behind in these issues, but it's just not going to happen that I pay back friends for a dinner out using crypto - and I'm not the most technologically impaired person around.

aitorpazos

@EU_Commission We already have Monero #xmr for that and it is not restricted to the EU or EEA, but anywhere in the world ;-)
Also, #xmr is battle tested and has resisted attacks from establishment institutions like yourself. It is less likely to suffer from bugs than centralized closed software built from ivory towers wasting tax payers money:

Uriel Fanelli

@aitorpazos@fosstodon.org @EU_Commission@social.network.europa.eu I never said "scam" or "crypto is a scam" in this message, neither "money laundry" in this answer. You are reading it wrong. Neither I said "tax avoidance": if you read this, your screen may be broken.

Haven't read through the docs yet, so I'm not yet sure if I like it or not.
But preparing the message for the target audience - check!

Kornel

@EU_Commission I'm looking forward to it! Similar requirements already exist within UK, and it's working very well.

Sam Vekemans

@EU_Commission in Canada, the Interac system is used with many Banks but there are lots of fees with it. :(

Andrew Yourtchenko

@EU_Commission it’s 60 cents to do so in the bank I use - but will be nice to have it by default! Thanks !
