NYC Glue

@thomasfuchs @Butcher @humanetech @Alisca Interesting. I know its super powerful. I used it myself over 10 years ago.

@Iragersh its true… overleaf is pretty popular (but non-free, which is why, for better or worse, google docs is replacing it - even for diehard latex lovers - depending on whether or not your institution pays up to use it).

@atthenius I used LaTeX probably 12 years ago. May have to consider it again for some reporting requirements we're getting.

@Iragersh @atthenius Something that might be worth checking out if you haven't is a combination like Markdown + Pandoc. It's flexible and powerful, and capable of generating ~pretty LaTeX as well as a bunch of other formats while working in near-plain-text on the user end.

Maximiliano

@atthenius @Iragersh Google docs is completely different from LaTeX, as far as I know. FWIT, I use a free LaTeX distribution (MikTeX) with a free, open-source editor (TeXStudio).

Maximiliano

@atthenius @Iragersh most journals related to technical stuff (maths, equations) require a LaTeX submission (less technical areas are fine with a Word file).

That requirement must not apply to climate sciences. But perhaps in other areas.

@PallidaMors76 @atthenius The company I'm with uses (CR) for reporting. Its certainly not free even though we use an ancient version and we had to start using a command line add on to make the CR work. The decision to use CR preceded me. I don't know why it was chosen vs something like or . I can only think because CR is .

@Iragersh @atthenius I see. Well, LaTeX is certainly not , though you eventually get used to it not being so 😬.

@PallidaMors76 @atthenius This comparison of editors en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparis may serve as a guide. I may have used . The name really sounds familiar. I personally don't care if a report writer is not . In fact, the nature of prevents comparisons which I find a real drawback.

@PallidaMors76 @Iragersh @atthenius When you've written enough math in LaTeX, you get so used to the notation that it is effectively WYSIWYG. I got to a point where I could do the math itself directly in LaTeX. At least up to a point.

@veronica @PallidaMors76 @atthenius If it was just about me there would be no hesitation but its not and I have to let others convince themselves that this is the way to go.

@Iragersh @Butcher @humanetech @thomasfuchs @Alisca currently an undergrad and we're required to use it for our math assignments (most of us use overleaf), so definitely still used

MANY moons ago I had to code the monthly employee newsletter and then print it to one of three shared printers in another part of the building. Who knew those end brackets were so important?
I was the Queen of Stack Dumps. IT had me on speed dial.
