Just a reminder Mastodon is just one software piece of software among many designed to interact with the fediverse using the Activitypub api. The fediverse is the federation of decentralized servers running software that utilizes this api. Popular fediverse platforms in Mastodon, Pleroma, Soapbox and Honk to name a few. Plus other picture hosting and blogging software too.
