@m0xee @thewk @linmob I have the same problem and try to remember people that there is an option for this and that it is really important to use it for visually impaired people. Here is a poll and discussion I started about this topic (even blind people reacted to it): https://social.linux.pizza/@utopify_org/108963885760340950

@utopify_org You are doing god's work!

@whynothugo @thewk It's a HP Elite X3 Lap Dock, which was sold with some Windows Phone originally - it's just screen, keyboard, touchpad, the "computer" is the phone, here the PinePhone.

@linmob @whynothugo @thewk another option is always the Nexdock360, of course which many people are using for Linux phone convergence.

@mobian @linmob @whynothugo @thewk I understand the 360 fixed some of the hardware issues in the 2 (e.g., it's much lighter), but the 2 has a frustrating ~20s auto power-off as soon as it loses the active display. Whenever the phone sleeps the display, the 2 powers down, cutting power and outright disconnecting the display on the phone's side. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get my hands on a 360 to compare. Would anyone with a 360 be willing to comment on whether this got fixed as well?

@mobian @linmob @whynothugo @thewk For others who might be interested (via Matrix): The 360 apparently has a 5 minute timeout. It still disconnects the display on power down, but the longer timeout significantly reduces frustration. (Thanks @spaetz for the boost)

@dannycolin @linmob This would be such a slam dunk for them. It would be mostly off the shelf parts and highly useful.

@dannycolin I've been saying this forever now. Start with the Pinebook Pro frame and alter it to use the Pinephone (Pro) as the trackpad and remove the internals, adside from the keyboard, screen, camera, etc. Add a battery inside and maybe a lower resolution screen.

@optimal Once I have the time to try that, I will also try it in a convergent setting. Soon ... ;-)

@linmob - Cool system. 🙂 Pine64 could combine a 21:9 ratio display with a keyboard for a slightly smaller mobile setup. The phone could be used as an apple-like external multipoint touchpad, but with the added bonus of the second display (and speaker too). With a longer usb-c cable the phone could even be used as a game controller with visual effects.

@scops In 2020 on ebay ;-) It works reasonably well (I have no similar products to compare it to) - with the PinePhone attached via a magnetic phone mount it tends to be a bit top heavy.
Silmathoron
@linmob did you buy the arm to lock the phone to the screen?
LINux on MOBile
@silmathoron It's from one of these 1000 randomly named amazon brands. I'll look it up.

@linmob What is the use of having the phone mounted on the side of a screen? Is it a screen extension?
LINux on MOBile
@utopify_org Yes, the Lap Dock is an additional screen for the phone. I stole the idea from @purism's recent post on the topic. Before I was looking to putting the phone into an envelope on the back of the Lap Dock's screen, as using just one screen is more performant. |
@linmob Is that a hp laptop dock?
Did not know about these...
