@linmob Is that a hp laptop dock?
Did not know about these...

TheWK :apple:

@m0xee @linmob
I remember that thing now. It came with the HP Elite X3 Windows Phone...

@thewk
I'm not sure it came included by default, they had regular dock which you could use to connect display and peripherals. But it definitely was an option!
That rare occasion when MS got something right, I mean Windows 10 Mobile, and the product fails miserably 🤣

@m0xee
Yes, they did. Also they copied the "continuity" feature from Ubuntu Touch, as they do with most things they get right ;-)

@thewk
Oh, yes, you're right, they did! And it was also discontinued 🤭
No, it is still supported by community, my phone can run it, but using Ubuntu 16 as base system is hardly enough for anyone. AFAIK, they are in the process of moving to Ubuntu 18.10 and there are discussions about 20.10. Maybe things will improve and this mobile OS will see some sort of revival🤷

@m0xee
They are currently in the transition to 20.04 as a base system.
I have the pro1x from fxtec waiting for it to release :-)

@m0xee @thewk @linmob I'm unable to find them online. Are they still for sale? Looks pretty modern to me.

@comcloudway
I'm not sure they are still sold by HP as Elite X3, the phone those were designed for, is no longer supported. I think eBay is your best bet.

Oops! I always try to provide the images I upload with text descriptions, however I always forget they are there when I look at what others post 🤪

@m0xee @thewk @linmob I have the same problem and try to remember people that there is an option for this and that it is really important to use it for visually impaired people.

Here is a poll and discussion I started about this topic (even blind people reacted to it): social.linux.pizza/@utopify_or

m0xEE

@utopify_org You are doing god's work!
I said this ironically, but I really approve of what you do. It's important, this place is for everyone to enjoy after all. I think I've only made a couple exceptions — but in those cases I think no lengthy description could make it clearer to visually impared person or one speaking different language.
Your thread is insightful, thanks for sharing!

@whynothugo @thewk It's a HP Elite X3 Lap Dock, which was sold with some Windows Phone originally - it's just screen, keyboard, touchpad, the "computer" is the phone, here the PinePhone.

Mobian

@linmob @whynothugo @thewk another option is always the Nexdock360, of course which many people are using for Linux phone convergence.

Oliver Kennedy

@mobian @linmob @whynothugo @thewk I understand the 360 fixed some of the hardware issues in the 2 (e.g., it's much lighter), but the 2 has a frustrating ~20s auto power-off as soon as it loses the active display. Whenever the phone sleeps the display, the 2 powers down, cutting power and outright disconnecting the display on the phone's side. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get my hands on a 360 to compare. Would anyone with a 360 be willing to comment on whether this got fixed as well?

Oliver Kennedy

@mobian @linmob @whynothugo @thewk For others who might be interested (via Matrix): The 360 apparently has a 5 minute timeout. It still disconnects the display on power down, but the longer timeout significantly reduces frustration. (Thanks @spaetz for the boost)

Danny Colin

@linmob next step: Pine64 needs to release a laptop dock like the Razer project Linda.

Andrew M

@dannycolin @linmob This would be such a slam dunk for them. It would be mostly off the shelf parts and highly useful.

Jawsh Mizzle
@dannycolin I've been saying this forever now. Start with the Pinebook Pro frame and alter it to use the Pinephone (Pro) as the trackpad and remove the internals, adside from the keyboard, screen, camera, etc. Add a battery inside and maybe a lower resolution screen.

TheOPtimal

@linmob Can you try with the WIP adaptive build of GNOME Shell?

LINux on MOBile

@optimal Once I have the time to try that, I will also try it in a convergent setting. Soon ... ;-)

Mahmoud - محمود

@linmob would this setup work with PinePhone Pro? Anyone from @PINE64 community maybe can comment.

LINux on MOBile

@mahmoudajawad It should work. I'll try to post a picture in the coming days.

vattuvarg

@linmob - Cool system. 🙂

Pine64 could combine a 21:9 ratio display with a keyboard for a slightly smaller mobile setup. The phone could be used as an apple-like external multipoint touchpad, but with the added bonus of the second display (and speaker too).

With a longer usb-c cable the phone could even be used as a game controller with visual effects.

scops

@linmob where did you get the hp dock? *.* how well does it work?

LINux on MOBile

@scops In 2020 on ebay ;-) It works reasonably well (I have no similar products to compare it to) - with the PinePhone attached via a magnetic phone mount it tends to be a bit top heavy.

scops

@linmob I missed them when they cost about 100 €… now they are about 400 x.x

Silmathoron

@linmob did you buy the arm to lock the phone to the screen?
If so, could you share a name/link?

LINux on MOBile

@silmathoron It's from one of these 1000 randomly named amazon brands. I'll look it up.

maxmoon 🌱

@linmob What is the use of having the phone mounted on the side of a screen? Is it a screen extension?

LINux on MOBile

@utopify_org Yes, the Lap Dock is an additional screen for the phone. I stole the idea from @purism's recent post on the topic. Before I was looking to putting the phone into an envelope on the back of the Lap Dock's screen, as using just one screen is more performant.
