@mariusor well, first of all, you only get one image size from Mastodon. Sometimes it's a 0.5 MB PNG. Why is it a PNG in the first place no one knows, but you aren't going to be able to load that over shitty EDGE in the middle of nowhere. Also hotlinking adds the overhead of having to establish many additional TLS connections – those take several round-trips.
