The Fediverse - the network of decentralised social network apps - has grown almost 40% over the last few weeks in terms of active users (almost all of which are new user accounts), and the increase currently shows no sign of slowing down.

@GossiTheDog Fediverse Observer while not as pretty has accurate daily numbers for individual services.

@spaduf @GossiTheDog Oh, I'm not sure if it is cool to locate all the private servers on a map?

Abie

@GossiTheDog wow thanks for the graph, it's uplifting! :)

@GossiTheDog Cool! Do we know how they're distributed amongst the different platforms? Are these still mostly mastodon, or are people rushing to pixelfed, or something else?

Chip

@GossiTheDog I suspect the bulk of that is the massive influx into pixelfed.

A user count graph for pixelfed.social, which has doubled over the last week (from about 125 thousand to over 250 thousand).
Kevin Beaumont

@bytex64 yep. It’s still happening on others (eg Mastodon is up nearly 10%) but bulk is Pixelfed

Justice 4 all

@GossiTheDog @bytex64 so I'm new to this and just made a Mastedon account.... Am I on the fediverse now ... Or is that a whole other thing

Chip

@GossiTheDog @JusticeArkansas Uhhh… yes. Mastodon is a server software that participates with other server software and we call that whole ball of yarn the fediverse.

Justice 4 all

@bytex64 @GossiTheDog thanks that's what I was leaning towards but I didn't want to start directing people to Mastodon if it was the wrong starting point...

Chip

@JusticeArkansas Well that’s the great part. Any other place in the fediverse is a fine starting point too because it all interoperates. Think of it in the same way that having a GMail account means you can email anyone, even if they’re not using GMail.

Justice 4 all

@bytex64 as you can tell I'm in Arkansas... And all of my main contacts are very let's just say not liberal.,.. slowly trying to expose their minds to more balanced rhetoric. The blue sky app was the first one I saw but I can say that's already been poisoned in their mind so maybe I can get this to work out.,.

A graph of monthly active users. subtitle: Aggregate Monthly Active Users Accross Fediverse Platforms.

From nine November 2024 to January 22 2025, we see the line starting somewhere between 1 and 1.2 millions, going slightly down until about the 10th of January, where it starts rising again, to about 1.3 millions at the last measure, going up significantly.

@GossiTheDog It's almost as if someone predicted a time like this would come and knew there would be a need for systems and protocols for a decentralized social space. Oh. Right. People did which is why we have the protocols that underlay Mastodon. Thank you to the forward thinking individuals and those who built it.

So is that how you do it -- make that graph look like it's actually showing something since the recent formatting change?

Looks like you're looking on your phone, and the graph show some uplift at the recent end

Myself, looking full-screen 1920@1080@60p on a 32 inch monitor, full-screen Firefox browser tab, I see only the faintest, softest curves upward

Pretty unimpressive, really

Also interesting to note that the time scale is daily for me with a significant gap between data points, while you've got four-day data points all run together

Interesting to consider *how* the data is presented affects the message delivered, I guess

Bet DanSup and Gargron like the data rendition you see better than the one I see...

Yes: I am feeling a bit snarky today...

@GossiTheDog

I have FediDB open in a tab daily

Some time ago I noticed a formatting change (really it was done with the time distribution) whereby in a browser tab, full screen HD 32" monitor, the top page, lead graphs were all virtually flat lines

Just thought to myself 'who would want this data portrayed in such an uninformative way?' but I see now it was reformatted for phones, because as we all know, *everyone* views the web through an "app" on their phones

Docktorow really needs a re-write to discuss the "enappification of the Internet"

That "enshitification" shchtick is so 2000s

@FinchHaven oh. It’s a graph with numbers at the side showing a 40% increase, people should be able to interpret it

William Johnson

@GossiTheDog Absolutely! Fediverse is really blowing up lately. Decentralization is catching on because people are tired of the big platforms and want more freedom. It’ll be interesting to see how this shifts the social media landscape overall!

I see Dud people!

@GossiTheDog Let's hope they stay and help the Fediverse grow. In a GOOD way, I mean!!

@GossiTheDog Posts (blue) and new account (green) on mastodon.social show real growth over the last few months.
There are some local initiatives that are really effective, for example in France @HelloQuitteX got some national press coverage, and I see a lot of new french users introducing themselves. French instances also report never seen before user growth, with whole communities (writers, artists…) joining and supporting each other to rebuild their communities

2 Line graphs, showing account creation and posting activity on mastodon.social.
Posting has grown by 25% and new account creation by 300% over the last 2-3 weeks.

And that's just the apps that condone tracking and counting their users.
Sergio

@GossiTheDog I am still wondering where mastodon is on users since they took down their hourly update several months ago. I recall that they had passed 15million and growing. What is the new magic number? @Mastodon #MastodonUsers @mastodonusercount

Kevin Beaumont

@sergiodomeyko @Mastodon @mastodonusercount that account wasn’t run by Mastodon. There’s various ones, try @usercounts.

Sergio

@GossiTheDog @Mastodon @mastodonusercount @usercounts WOW i’m surprised to see we have lost over 5 million users! what happened?

Sergio

@GossiTheDog @Mastodon @mastodonusercount @usercounts this was the account i was following. take a look at the numbers

0xDECAFBAD

@sergiodomeyko The metric has always been useless, it doesn't tell you if the users are actually doing anything. Any service gets a lot of tire kickers who make an account and then never use it.

Monthly or daily active users if you have that data is a much better indicator of how popular a social media site is.

@GossiTheDog Someone really ought to make a video like this dogecoin.avi but for the fediverse

@GossiTheDog I think im one of those new people. The "old" social Media Like Facebook, X etc are to right-wing radical in Germany. And nobody did anythink against that in the Last Months. So Here i Am!
