About a million Americans joined the Chinese social media platform Red Note.

Americans are being radicalized by seeing the grocery bills and medical bills of Chinese people.

Chinese people are being radicalized by learning about the 40-hour work week and overtime pay.

Now it's a race to see if the Chinese government or the US government bans this first.

Yen-han Chen
@Chen YenHan
Red Note user from Jiangsu: “why do you get both weekend days off and not have to work overtime?”

You can consider forming a union and, if necessary, go on strike to protest.

Mark Valorian @markvalorian-6h
Lmao giving CCPers advice to start a union

Xi may pull this app voluntarily 😂

@tofugolem I'm going to guess that the Chinese .gov will see the propaganda value and tamp down on anything that gets to be too out of hand. They are very good at and have lots of experience with keeping the ferment of social media down to a dull roar.

I'm guessing the US gets age restrictions and some not particularly difficult technical solutions (dns overrides, blackhole routing of certain networks, etc.).

And yes the US repression will be overt even if the US propaganda is all about defending the homeland from the red scare. The despotism playbook dictates that censorship be known to exist even as it's true extent and subjects are obscure.

Effing interesting times.

@tofugolem From what I heard, the grocery bills differences were mostly because doing simple currency conversions doesn't account for purchasing power, so an American going to China would get a better deal on their dollars after conversion, but for someone working a job in China groceries would have a similar impact on their finances as for an American in the US. Haven't seen anything about medical costs, but it's hard to be worse than the US on that front.

@tofugolem Also, it's naive to think that Chinese people didn't know about the 40-hour-workweek or overtime pay before. While all unions except the state-run non-union are banned, there are still worker's struggles throughout the country (see chuangcn.org/ for examples). Having some cultural exchange is valuable, especially considering the ramping up of tensions between the two countries concerned), but I doubt it will have much effect when it comes to labour issues.

@tofugolem I’d be surprised if the app doesn’t simply block most American comments from appearing to Chinese users, based on keywords like “strike” and “union”.

@tofugolem its curious we dont share more info anyway. The one thing that globalisation is good for is making people aware that different ways of doing things have been tested.

Tofu Golem

@haui
Depends on what you mean by info. Data privacy is a serious issue, and America should have laws like the EU has.

haui

@tofugolem given the context of the matter, I was of course referring to sharing info on practices in different countries as shown in the post I responded to.

Trinsec

@tofugolem@mastodon.social Wait, do Chinese people work literally every day?

Pratik Patel

@tofugolem Considering that the company is hiring English speaking moderators, I suspect all the US-based radical ideas will disappear from Manderin-speaking people.
