Riot lacked a lot of the newer features ( including #E2EE ) and the Element ( the company ) developers didn't have any intention of updating that app. All the newer features went into RiotX which has become Element now.
@Gargron not only rebranded, but changed things too. Hope this issue I encountered will be fixed soon. Conversations also runs in the background, but with hardly noticeable powerdrain. So it seems it's possible. But I have no idea on if it can/can't be done.

@Gargron @Hanstux probably meant Riot vs RiotX. #RiotX was what was re-branded to #Element.
