Applause for the marketing team who turned this bug into a feature

"Easy to Use - Please note that this USB-C to USB Adapter only supports single-sided 10Gbps high-speed transmission (while other brands only provide 1/2 transmission speed). The Type-C female port allows you to switch between USB 3.1 speed and USB 2.0 speed with a simple flip of the Type C plug . Now you can enjoy unparalleled transmission quality from your devices!"

@jonty eew. They can be the second against the wall when the revolution comes.

@jonty@chaos.social and stating that "other brands" only support USB 2.0?? an older revision of USB, which probably starts with a 3 but I tried to look up which one it is and I got a headache just looking at the first result so idk what to call it. I guess it has it be USB 3.0 they mean?

@jonty@chaos.social The funny thing is that I have needed a USB 2.0 connection to a data modem that supports 3.0 to get around a problem with the xhci drivers in Linux constantly resetting the modem before, so this is actually a use case for me...

@jonty In other words "We forgot to include the 2.1k resistor on both CC pins." Hilarious.

sudonem

@minfer @jonty I mean... maybe. But...that's pretty hard to argue when excluding the 2.1k pull-down resistor on those CC pins means their product is now not USB-C compliant. And also in bulk, one of those will cost $0.0009 on average.

@jonty β€˜ah yes i want my usb to be slower’

Comrade elronxenu

@jonty I always throttle back my cable speeds to save power!

Comrade elronxenu

@jonty Some people can't understand this, but the joke's on them when they wear out their wires!

@jonty The whole point of the USB-C shape was to not have an orientation, so you couldn't plug it in wrong. This is so bad.

Pickle Rick :arakawa:

@jonty haha... we call those "FEEEAtures".

Microsoft used to do that all the time back in the 90s -- redefine a bug as a feature. And we'd say, "oh, it's a FEEEAture.." rolling our eyes...

@jonty I have a Samsung flash-drive that has an integrated C2A Adapter. They put arrows on it, so that you plug it in right, else it does the same thing. Can you not mke a passive dongle, that connects all pins, or are they saving pennies?

@jonty Finally, someone fixed the problem of USB-C connectors working the same when plugged in upside down! /s

genstar.service

@jonty I actually have an external HDD that doesn't even fucking work on 3.0 mode so I have to use a hub or the USB 2.0 port on my Laptop.

@jonty that's what you get when you let marketing people generate copy with AI.
