First they came for the journalists, who were very surprised to find themselves in a giant warehouse filled with minorities, immigrants, disabled, trans, and gay people.

@jetton I am a queer journalist l. They have been coming after me for some time now, mostly because for being queer.

@jetton ...very surprised to see that those people had existed and had had stories to tell, warnings to share? Alas...

@jetton "I guess y'all had a shorter ride than us."

@jetton Disabled people like me have been screaming ourselves hoarse about the harm done by the Tories/neoliberal austerity since 2010 - backed up by numerous United Nations, BMJ, and countless charities - and been ignored at almost every turn.

I take no pleasure whatsoever in saying "we tried to warn you, but you didn't care".

Just blocked all of the ByLines accounts for platforming mainstream hate media transphobic narrative on the Scottish Gender Reform Bill being "controversial".

There were surprisingly quite a lot of them, took me a couple of minutes to send them all to Hades

What is controversial is that so much of the media have aligned themselves with TERFs, presenting the view of a tiny bigoted minority as if it is prevailing.

Fortunately this isn't like other platforms and we don't accept that behaviour in the Fediverse.

Hope

@jetton @Ecosaurian but of course they have ‘investigated’ and pronounced on their own transphobic articles as being entirely acceptable…that’s ok then, it’s those bloody transgender types moaning about their right to exist again, meanwhile all the CIS journos, TERFs, GC haters, evangelists, Tories, Republicans and fascists will just have that debate without them…hosted by the MSM of course, because it’s controversial innit.

@TheMorrigan @jetton
There's no convincing bigots.
I saw their pathetic defense of the choice of words. As we all know, words have power.

If they're going to spout their propaganda we explain why it's wrong should other readers see it, then drop them in a sewer and put the lid back on.

No more clickbait, they're now ignored, the ultimate punishment for journalists.

@Ecosaurian @jetton

Hmm, I hadn't seen this. Looks like I shall be unfollowing them.

Thanks for the heads up.

@adaliabooks

It's possible over the past few months they've learnt a lesson and taken a better tone - but I've not been checking and their response when it was first flagged to them was poor.

In Search of a Better World

@Ecosaurian @jetton

This is what happens when so much of your journalist class went to the same schools as each other.

WTF

@jetton If they came for the journalists first we would never know who they came for next.

Paulina Ashland

@jetton Journalists aren’t all NYT opinion writers. They’re also people making $40k to cover school board meetings for an article no one will bother to read.

Amanda Keramik

@jetton Is it appropriate to snort with laughter at this? 👀
😁

FeralRobots

@jetton

Aside: Reminds me of a mini-rant a follow posted on birdsite some weeks back, pointing out that Neimoller's first-person formulation in that poem was REALLY F*ING INTENTIONAL.

As in, THESE WERE MISTAKES THAT HE, PERSONALLY, MADE. That he was basically telling people 'HEY GUYS I MARTIN NEIMOLLER PERSONALLY F*D THIS UP, DON'T MAKE MY MISTAKES OR MORE PEOPLE WILL GET HURT.'

Jewish conversations

@jetton

My friend, first they came for the Jews - and almost every other group never spoke up for Jewish people then, or now. The antisemitism among many groups today is so strong that people in them take quotes about Jews and the Holocaust - and erase the Jews from it. Like right here, right now.
Allyship is only meaningful if we all help each other - not if one group alone is singled out, and allowed to be persecuted. We can choose to be stronger together in love. That is the way.

wizzwizz4

@JewishConversations @jetton The first murdered victim may have been Arthur Kahn. Killed 1933-04-12 for being Jewish, true, – but arrested c. 1933-03-22 on (false) communism charges, and murdered alongside three Communist Jews.

So it is not inaccurate to say that "first they came for the Communists" (as Niemöller did, every time he made that speech).

Likewise: 1933-05-06, the Institut für Sexualwissenschaft was attacked. 1933-05-10, its books were burned. People were killed.

@JewishConversations @jetton People do edit out the groups they don't like – which entirely misses the point. (marcuse.faculty.history.ucsb.e) And you are absolutely correct about the antisemitism, both then and now.

But you're missing a different point: this isn't about Europe in 1933. It's about the anglosphere, today. Antisemitism's still rife, sure, but not at the forefront of the current wave of hate. Queers, immigrants, and disabled people are being made to die, right now.

wizzwizz4

@JewishConversations @jetton Nothing you have said here is wrong, per se. But I'm concerned by the strategy revealed by your choice of what to say.

We will not prevent it from happening again by only preparing to fight the last war.

kurtsh

@jetton And then they all created Mastodon accounts & proceeded to complain incessantly about the lack of a QT feature.

@rticks
If I remember correctly, I wrote that post in response to a NYT column stating how journalists were always the first to be attacked by authoritarian leaders…

@jetton better a warehouse with the people you described than heaven with a bunch of insufferable evangelicals.

BWheatNYC

@jetton No offense to journalists, but I reblogged this because it has a powerful message.

CautionWIP 🇨🇦 🏳️‍🌈

@Bwheatnyc @jetton I’m confident that #NotAllJournalists isn’t needed. Those that know the score - and won’t play the game - are certainly aware of the sins of omission of those who do.

Tofu Golem

@jetton
Yes, but the journalists oppose jailing journalists, which makes them exactly as bad and exactly as extreme as the government, so you cannot say that the government is bad for jailing those journalists.

But both sides! But both sides! Let's stop all of this polarization that comes from criticizing only one side!

The above is a parody of past behaviors of journalists.

Urzl

@jetton That's how it works when you ignore all the "small" stories until they're huge.

PNW Deb

@jetton Journalists appear to think they are immune. Enable the fascists and see where that gets you…
