We were having coffee outside this morning, Rekka looked at the lifelines sleeves and asked "do you think it's rusty inside".

Turns out the metal cables we rely on to keep us from falling overboard are completely corroded, and some spokes are even cut through.

@neauoire 😲

This element should never be hidden.

I will check mine tomorrow

mikael

@neauoire Ouch. In the world of old bikes that would probably have been classified as “surface rust”. But if my life depended on it I would replace. What about climbing ropes at sea? It’s made for other environments obviously...

Devine Lu Linvega

@mikael some people are using dynema for lifelines, we might use that if we replace them.

mikael

@neauoire Oh, interesting material. Looks like a good choice.

rostiger

@neauoire Uh oh time for some replacements! Have you found any material as sturdy but less prone to corrosion or will you have to go with steel again?

Devine Lu Linvega

@rostiger we'll have to think about this, might go for dynema.

@neauoire woah @rek what made you think of this?? :o I would have, I think, imagined that "nah it looks pretty sealed from the outside air".

Bill Mania

@neauoire Yup, I've seen that on past boats of mine. Will you replace them with more coated wire or leave them bare?

Bill Mania

@neauoire Oh, fancy. I'm still getting used to the idea of using those new materials for places where I've always used metal. Soft shackles still just don't feel right to me. 😉
