@dankeykang is it actually royalty free? I've heard people dispute that

DankeyKang

@polly Seems a little murky depending on what you read. This is what I found on Wikipedia - there doesn't seem to be any explicit royalties, but access to the standard's specifications through VESA requires a membership.

AFAIK that's still a much better deal for vendors than what's required with HDMI.

"While VESA does not charge any per-device royalty fees, VESA requires membership for access to said standards.[63] The minimum cost is presently $5,000 (or $10,000 depending on Annual Corporate Sales Revenue) annually."

@dankeykang@hachyderm.io @foone@digipres.club And no weird limitations because they are against open source.

@dankeykang @foone i don't get it. why is it called a death generator?

DankeyKang

@yujiri @foone Quoting their GitHub page for the project,

"This creates GAME OVER/YOU DIED screens as seen in Sierra Online's SCI engine, as well as lots of other fake videogame screenshots from many, many games."

Does that help you understand?

@dankeykang @foone but none of them look like GAME OVER/YOU DIED screens

Luna Lactea

Assuming you're talking about the latches in some cables, they are an optional part of the spec. If you have the resources, you may be able to find and purchase replacement DP cables without latches!

I personally prefer them because my cable spaghetti can cause things to come undone on their own. 🙃
