European Commission

Today, we ordered TikTok to freeze and preserve all data and evidence linked to the Romanian elections.

This follows recent declassified information pointing to foreign interference from Russia.

We are also intensifying contacts with digital and cyber regulators across Europe in light of emerging evidence of systematic inauthentic activity.
A key step to enforce the Digital Services Act.

At the centre is a magnifying glass with a chart inside. @Huubje @EUCommission it has to include all the closed source social media platforms.

OTOH we're talking about a government that still didn't ban the X/Twitter but still playing around as an angel.

We're not eating these though, just fyi EU.

@Huubje @EUCommission there has been recent investigation into it by NGOs and other civil groups related to unregulated political advertising on the platform related to the elections

@endorama @EUCommission thanks for the link! I still need to look into the supplied sources but this seems like run of the mill stuff? Political manipulation is rampant on all platforms.

@endorama @Huubje @EUCommission not only ngos. as of this time the constitutional court was convocated like three times to decide whether the first round is cancelled or not

@Huubje @EUCommission
Because of TikTok already having been identified as a major source: bbc.com/news/articles/cgq18w50. Whether the Romanian authorities also looked at other services remains unknown - maybe X is making it harder to investigate behind-the-scenes funding streams nowadays? Would not be surprising...

@Huubje @EUCommission
Do you know many other state-controlled social networks? Except for RU VK. That's why.

@EUCommission And what about the biggest disinformation machine Twitter? Are there any actions?

Maksym Hazevych

@NatureMC @EUCommission IMHO TikTok is much more popular than Twitter, so it is a more important target

Petra van Cronenburg

@mks_h It doesn't depend on popularity but on complying to the EU law or not!
The EU already had different actions, also against Twitter and Meta. Therefore, I ask about the elections-action.

@EUCommission Allowing the Chinese-owned software to be used in the EU is a privilege, or a right (same for Twitter and Facebook).

A key step to enforce the Digital Services Act...

Against Russia?

@EUCommission That is wonderful to see. I wonder if there's anything you could do regarding TikTok's harmful challenges, like the recent "Superman Challenge", in which someone throws themselves with one hand forward into the arms of others? There have been at least dozens of cases here in Romania where children and teens have had to go to the hospital with severe injuries due to this dumb challenge.

@EUCommission Great news, hopefully there will also be ramifications for possible non-compliance to that order.

For commenters who didn't read the linked page: the Commission received specific information regarding TikTok (most likely from an EU state's police or intelligence agency). Meta, Google and X were also asked to explain their operations regarding the election.
