"Microsoft Office, like many companies in recent months, has slyly turned on an “opt-out” feature that scrapes your Word and Excel documents to train its internal AI systems. This setting is turned on by default, and you have to manually uncheck a box in order to opt out.

If you are a writer who uses MS Word to write any proprietary content (blog posts, novels, or any work you intend to protect with copyright and/or sell), you’re going to want to turn this feature off immediately.

I won’t beat around the bush. Microsoft Office doesn’t make it easy to opt out of this new AI privacy agreement, as the feature is hidden through a series of popup menus in your settings:

On a Windows computer, follow these steps to turn off “Connected Experiences”: File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings > Privacy Options > Privacy Settings > Optional Connected Experiences > Uncheck box: “Turn on optional connected experiences”"

@remixtures 7 submenus and it has some misleading checkbox title?

Why are you still using Microsoft products
Davide Madrisan

@remixtures Or even better, use an open source alternative like LibreOffice (that as a bonus makes use of a standard document format).

FediThing 🏳️‍🌈

@remixtures

Hey @libreoffice you might want to highlight this is happening when encouraging people to switch to LibreOffice?

Григорий Клюшников

Why do people use latest versions of Microsoft Office? The one that corresponds to Windows 7 still works just fine and has none of that shit.

Yaroslav Khnygin

@grishka Can they buy new licenses for that version?

Григорий Клюшников

Yaroslav, online, most probably not. And it still works without activation, it just nags you a bit. But if you really need a license, I believe buying a physical copy second-hand would count because it does come with one.

Human 3500

@grishka Why do people use any Microsoft products? There are options. @remixtures

Григорий Клюшников

Human, because they've been using them since they first saw a computer and it's hard to change one's habits, especially if the end result of such a change is being able to do the same things you started with, just differently?

Human 3500

@grishka Yet we do exactly that with other things - every new car is different but does basically the same as the previous one.

I do understand that people are lazy and often do things that are not in their best interests. I've worked very closely with Microsoft several times (i even interviewed there) and they only care about Microsoft.

My point was that you don't have to use Microsoft - if people want to pay money to be exploited, that's their decision. @remixtures

Jamie 🏳️‍⚧️ 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

@human3500 @grishka @remixtures this so very true. I’ve been using Microsoft since my first home computer in 95, as it’s got shittier and bloated up, I’ve been too lazy to switch to anything else.

I’ve been waiting for the thing to push me over the edge, and this is just about it. My daughter (proper computer geek) has been pushing me to Linux for ages. Today is that day I think!

jfml - Jonas Laugs

@grishka @remixtures @human3500 I totally get that, I've been slowly transitioning to Linux and FOSS software in the last years. Especially learning #Inkscape after using Adobe Illustrator for more then ten years alost daily was not easy. But so worth it in the end and while Inkscape of course isn't perfect (neither is Illustrator, not by a long shot) and I do miss some features / workflows from Illustrator I'm super happy I made the switch.

@remixtures lole

you know how many govt orgs use MS Office?
this is hilarious

@remixtures What, exactly, isn't clear to people about "to improve Microsoft products and services, you grant to Microsoft a worldwide and royalty-free intellectual property license to use Your Content".
microsoft.com/en/servicesagree

It's there. It's always been there. And no, you can't "turn it off".

"If you are a writer"? NO ONE should be using software with such an awkward clause in its license.

Like a landlord that comes to snoop in your stuff "to improve our housing facilities". Come on.

@MattMerk @valentyn @remixtures

So here is a conundrum for you. Yes, I already know the answer is use Linux and Libreoffice:

Say you are a healthcare provider. Say you have a HIPAA BAA subcontractor agreement with Microsoft (medical privacy agreement) that Microsoft will keep all medical data private. But then, these AI practices and contractual provisions also exist.

Gee, I wonder which set of legal agreements will prevail?

Georgiana Brummell
@valentyn @remixtures So if I use Wordpad or Notepad, and save things exclusively to my computer and thumb drive, can they literally read the files on my computer? Does it matter what version of Windows I use? I have XP, 7, and 11. I recently read about telemetry, etc. being included in 7, but I can't imagine they could do this with XP. What if I use something like Jarte, or Notepad 2, which aren't made by Microsoft?
イリエ
@remixtures the only Word I still use (rarely) is Word 2003. Can't trust any of the new stuff
RegalBeagle

@remixtures Only here to shill Libre Office. Been using it for years and it just works. Switch to FOSS and take back control of your data.

William B Peckham

@remixtures I wonder how all the big corporations feel about having their secrets scraped?

javalps

@remixtures I don't understand is it really hard to switch to other #FOSS alternatives like #Libreoffice and #Onlyoffice.

Phil Thane ✅

@javalps
For most people it's dead easy. There can be problems for people working with very complex documents who need 100% compatibility with co-workers on MS Office, but I wrote magazine and web content for 20 years using first Open Office and later Libre Office. Never had a problem.
@remixtures

John McChesney-Young

@pthane @javalps @remixtures I reluctantly use MS Word most of the time at work because a good proportion of forms I need to fill out work poorly in LibreOffice. That said, I think I'll change my default application for .doc(x) files to LO and only use Word when LO doesn't work. It's tempting to start creating long new files in Word using randomtextgenerator.com/ or a similar site for every non-random file, too.

Mikalai

@javalps @remixtures
its simple inertia that can be wrapped and described in many volumes of words.

Jen

@javalps @remixtures yes, it's hard to switch to a different office package.

It's no harder than switching between versions of MS Office and people have done that multiple times. But only when forced to by an upgrade, new machine, or new job, and often with a *lot* of complaining. "Why do they have to change things?" is a common refrain when the Save icon is a few pixels further right.

People typically don't learn to use computers by understanding, they learn to use their own by rote.

SuperMoosie

@javalps

Wife complains about it not being MS word, which ahe is used to at work.

She also has the option of MS word from 22 years ago, which I found sitting on a work network cd drive, but that is too old and not the same, despite it being able to do 99.999% of what she does at work.

@remixtures

javalps

@SuperMoosie @remixtures I use #Obsidian and I want everything in Obsidian. My friend use #Notion and want everything in Notion. If I or my friend have to change our workspace, it would be difficult & frustrating even if our work are mostly identical, just note-taking.

What I want to say is, I understand you.

The thing with software is, it's just like life. New things come up every once in a decade and you've to adapt to it. Like life, new problems new solutions.

P J Evans

@SuperMoosie @javalps @remixtures
About 22 years ago I was rebuilding a document using Office95. (I got Office 2003 a year or so after that.)
The people who used that doc after I rebuilt it? They loved it. It was reorganized into sections that made sense, and had a whole section on Weird Things You Run Into.
In the process I learned how to do a document template and how to use a master doc with subdocs (but couldn't get it to number pages the way I wanted, so I didn't do that).

Matthew Merkovich - Masto SJW

@SuperMoosie Divorce is always an option. Desperate times call for desperate measures!
@javalps @remixtures

javalps

@MattMerk @SuperMoosie @remixtures What I'm saying is, you should not go for a divorce just because you wife uses #MSword.

Matthew Merkovich - Masto SJW

@javalps Um, I understand that when talking about computer technology, many people can't see when something is a joke. What I said was a joke. Clearly no sane person would recommend someone get a divorce because of their spouse using a perticular brand of software ...

... unless it was published by Microsoft!!!

Again, a joke ... (probably).

@SuperMoosie @remixtures

javalps

@MattMerk @SuperMoosie @remixtures Yea ! I thought you're serious. Pls use emojis(😅, 😁, 🙂, 🤔, 😑, 😶, etc.) in jokes. It helps to differentiate.

Matthew Merkovich - Masto SJW replied to javalps

@javalps But this conversation just made it funnier! It's like the Monty Python and the Holy Grail scene where Lancelot just keeps running toward the castle, and then they cut to the two guards watching him approach, and then cut back to Lancelot running toward the castle, and then cut back to the guards, and then they cut back to Lancelot running toward the castle ...

@remixtures they've been doing this for years. Captcha also!

El Duvelle

@remixtures thanks for sharing.
That's horrible, and I guess illegal in Europe + UK because I don't see it in my settings (I am currently in UK)... Would be good if other countries improved their privacy laws to at least match European ones..

Michael Wehle

@elduvelle @remixtures This setting appeared in my Office 2021 here in Berlin and was checked by default.

Metamere

@remixtures Good timing. My Office 365 subscription just renewed a few days ago, and I was lamenting that I wasn't getting my money's worth from it. Well, now I have LibreOffice installed and got a $75 refund. Thanks.

@remixtures
I'll make sure it's turned on while I test some VBA code to generate gigabytes of pseudorandom numbers and create a bunch of charts from them.

Wandering Thinker
And you really think that it in reals this option work? 😀
Microsoft to believe - disrespect youself.
MostlyTato

@remixtures
And do this each time Windows updates.

Kierkegaanks regretfully

@remixtures so then you send it to someone who hasn’t opted out to read

Tingo

@remixtures

And that is why we use Notepad. Or Open Office in a pinch.

Benjamin S-B :verified:

@remixtures Could someone please fact-check this? I had a look at the setting in question, and I can't see any reference to data uploads or AI training. I also didn't find any reliable sources that this setting has anything to do with uploading your content for AI training purposes. I'm not saying it isn't conceivable that MS does this, but I don't think the "Optional Connected Experiences" has anything to do with it.

Wandering Thinker
Your can check it youself if install firewall and look adresses and sites to wich going traffic.
Lisa

@bensb You've really got to go down a rabbit hole with MS to see what they're up to, but it appears that they DO collect your data if you've used Copilot. We use MS products at work. Even tho I never activate it and have tried to turn it off, Copilot accessed a Word doc of mine and made unwanted formatting changes to it this week. I never use Word anymore at home.

bison ✅

@remixtures wonder if this is a thing in europe. I hunted the same checkbox multiple times in dropbox and its just not there. I guess you can't do that in europe due to the GDPR.

Allen

@remixtures How has Microsoft not been sued over this for all the HIPAA violations. Or are we going to pretend medical organizations don't use Office?

ferricoxide

@remixtures@tldr.nettime.org

I'm still using Office 2019 (when I need to use Office at all). Some of my customers require the use of their O365, so it's unlikely I can change settings managed via organization policies. All just more reason not to try to maintain personal sovereignty of data. Just wish that "locking" data in the cloud was easier to do.

Bishop Whitewind

@remixtures Nah tell you what I did. I manually uninstalled Windows and put Linux on everything for free 👍

therieau

@remixtures Here's a note for the "why don't you just switch" crowd. Enterprise inertia.

They're not going to give up Microsoft Office, so the rest of us need to keep using their stuff.

Thank you Miguel. This is a greatly appreciated warning. Also, on a Macintosh, go to Word > Preferences > Privacy > Learn more about the Microsoft Services Agreement...
and uncheck "Turn on optional connected experiences"

Cheers!

@remixtures I still can't believe "opt out" is legal.

Privacy violations always should have been opt in. Never opt out.

Infoseepage #StopGazaGenocide

@remixtures Don't opt out of the feature. Opt out of Microsoft Office. You shouldn't have to toggle off a long set of user violating defaults just to use a product without your privacy and IP being violated.

Lisa

@remixtures I've switched to #LibreOffice and love it, but thanks for this important PSA re: #privacy and #ai

tjk

@remixtures I wonder how lawyers feel about privileged docs being used for this purpose.

Mx. Luna Corbden

@remixtures @msbellows I am so glad to have an ancient copy of MS Office 2011 for Mac that I cherish. I do most of my writing in Scrivener, by a small company which will likely never behave like this, but still use Word, Excel, etc when I have to. I'm going to try to hold into these as long as possible. I've turned off auto updates on everything that will let me. And I'll soon be looking into moving my clients' communications away from Google Docs to maybe something like Proton.

M.S. Bellows, Jr.

@corbden @remixtures I like LibreOffice better than anything since Corel WordPerfect for DOS.

Mx. Luna Corbden

@msbellows @remixtures Yes but will Libre let you see every document in the whole project in an organized folder list to one side while you compare, reference, and edit two documents side by side in a split screen, like Scrivener can?

Scotsbear 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🐻

@corbden@defcon.social @msbellows@c.im @remixtures@tldr.nettime.org Never mind fancy dan features like that: I dumped Libreoffice because it doesnt support using named ranges in cell lists (among other shortfalls but that one was a deal-breaker). Pretty sure Excel has had that since the mid-90s.

M.S. Bellows, Jr.

@corbden @remixtures Isn't that what 5x8 cards, thumbtacks, and a resigned acknowledgement that you'll never get the security deposit back anyway are for?

P J Evans

@remixtures
I'm using an old version, so they're not getting to mine. Also, for most stuff, I use LibreOffice. (There are some things I can't get it to do.)

Ω 🌍 Gus Posey

@remixtures I'm starting to feel about #Microsoft the same way I feel about Donald; both seem committed to destroying what works.

Scott Grimmett

@remixtures On MacOS, remove the check-mark at the end of this path: Word > Preferences > Privacy > Manage Connected Experiences > Turn on experiences that analyse your content

Matthew Merkovich - Masto SJW

@remixtures You must also activate your own internal blind trust that Microsoft won't just scrape anything you type anyway. I don't recommend trusting them with absolutely anything.

Lukewarm Skywalker

@remixtures
Or you could just try using SoftMaker Office instead. It's cheaper and doesn't spy on you, and is the most compatible-with-MSOffice word processor out there.

@remixtures >write any proprietary content
Proprietary works do not leave me content.

>any work you intend to protect with copyright
Copyright restrictions are automatic for any creative work - you cannot choose whether your works are copyrighted or not.

If you don't want a work to be restricted by copyright, it must be validly released to the public domain.

Such opt-out option will only operate for a short while before the option will reset.

The only way to actually opt-out is to stop using microsofts proprietary malware and install GNU/Linux.
@remixtures >write any proprietary content
Proprietary works do not leave me content.

"This setting is turned on by default, and you have to manually uncheck a box in order to opt out."

@remixtures I use since 1995 Linux. To use #microsoft and #apple products just shows: the user doesen't care about his data.
So what is the problem?😜

seanfroot

@remixtures i did this, and now when I open Word i cant see any of the files i have saved to OneDrive. Is there any way to stop the AI scraping without shutting down inter-app functions?

Scotsbear 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🐻

@remixtures@tldr.nettime.org There are dozens of alternative options for writers, and a healthy amount for Excel. There really is no need to be using MS product in the year of our lord 2024. Imagine actually paying to then spend your life dealing with their massive amounts of bullshit. Ludicrous.

nex

@remixtures If you are a writer who uses MS Word to write any proprietary content (blog posts, novels, or any work you intend to protect with copyright and/or sell), you’re a fucking moron and you should leave this feature on so you'll keep poisoning Microsoft's data with your inane bullshit.

Tony Novak CPA

@remixtures FWIW, in contrast, I was formerly a professional business writer who had most content used without permit or license by offshore thieves decades ago. It no longer bothers me and I have no expectation of privacy or protection now. People who seek privacy seem to me to be fighting a losing battle. I use Microsoft 365 including Copilot daily in my work and personal life now.

Wandering Thinker
Privacy doesn't need to search. It is an inalienable human birthright that is brazenly trampled upon by governments and corporations. And people who have “nothing to hide” are working against themselves and their descendants, paving the way to a digital concentration camp through their naiveté.
