"An AI chatbot called FungiFriend was added to a popular mushroom identification Facebook group Tuesday. It then told users there how to 'sauté in butter' a potentially dangerous mushroom."

A moderator for the group said that the bot was automatically added by Meta, and that “we are most certainly removing it from here.”

Yikes.

@rek damn, those groups are bad enough with users posting pics of any kind of mushroom half-way to being sauteed already with the question

"edible??"

R E K

@cblgh yeesh, that must make the mods hella nervous...

@rek @cblgh

Someone somewhere sometime on the Internet joked "All mushrooms are edible ... once" and the AI ran with it.

Or will run with it.

@RobertJackson58585858 @cblgh Like that time some redditor recommended people eat rocks or add glue to pizza which Google's AI picked up.

@rek haha ya but they're usually polite, and swift, about informing that kind of user about a better mushroom practice :]

being in those groups is one of the best ways i've found of ambiently learning more about local mushrooms. sucks they're stuck on fb tho

@cblgh That's good to hear :>... (about the mods being awesome, not the group being locked on FB :P)
