Back when logging was done by hand, axes were used to cut large notches in the base of the tree. The loggers would then insert a wood plank into the notch, stand on it, and use crosscut saws to saw down the massive old growth trees that blanketed the area.

@neauoire it’s beautiful to see the moss growing over the stump and nearby trees sprouting from its roots. Even in the destruction of one tree, so much new life is given a chance to thrive.

@neauoire There's one on Cortes that they _started_ cutting down and it tipped against another and then they left them both (speculation being: "f this, those are gunna fall on us!")

@meejah do you know where it is on Cortes? I'd love to go and find it.

@neauoire I can't remember the name of the park, but there's a park with some old sawmill stuff and "an engine". Looking at the island now, I'm pretty sure in Kw'as park? I think the store in Manson's has some nice local trail-maps. I _think_ I ran from Quais Bay road somewhere (but might be shorter from the other side?)

@meejah Oh, okay, yeah it would be easier from the other side for us. We'll stop by on the way down :)
