Had a fascinating conversation with an attendee at
my conference this past week, about Return to
Office policies. For context, my client, the company
he works for, just starting pushing that and it's not
going over well. The company started as mostly
remote, but new leadership has changed courses.
And thanks to our conversation, I have a better
understanding of why more companies are doing
this - and it's not because of the real estate

So, this guy used to work for another
company where they did extensive research
on this - interviewed people at all levels to
see how they felt about it, and why. Of
course, most workers preferred remote or
were willing to come in as needed. A small
portion preferred in-office work at all times.

I've been assuming it was because they
were paying for office space and wanted it
used.
No. That's not it.
What he found in his research is that the
TOP executive leadership DIDN'T FEEL LIKE
LEADERS if they didn't have people in
offices around them. The corner office with
the window didn't mean anything if they
couldn't emerge to see lower level workers
in their cubicles.
They wanted to be able to easily pull people
into spontaneous meetings, and to be able
to boss someone around in person.

@theropologist @jcriecke yeah always has been. The only reason companies waste money is for the mastabatory habits of their executives. Otherwise they'd discharge that extra real estate so fast
