@ntoskrnl@furry.engineer start our own DNS root network, then we can have any TLDs

The Doctor

@ntoskrnl They know what many of us would do with it.

Netux

@ntoskrnl y'all do know that dns only works because we agree to it, right? You could hijack .fox anywhere you have control of zone files.

Snep :floofBlep:

@Netux @ntoskrnl Which kinda falls apart when you want someone to access that DNS name that doesn't want to or cannot change their DNS to something custom, or when you want to do TLS things™ without handing out your own CAs to everyone as well :/

There already are intranets over the internet doing their own thing (which is cool, don't get me wrong!), but it usually requires reconfiguration of your client/router/server or a VPN connection

Netux

@snep @ntoskrnl don't forget alternate root servers. The wild net is a weird place.

Mostly in jest, but if you ran an isp you could hijack a tdl by declaring yourself authorative and stop recursing for it.

Point all .Fox at goatse

@Netux @snep @ntoskrnl AlterNIC existed for years, it wasn't successful, or good. But its certainly possible.

@ntoskrnl ew, TIL that brand TLDs are a thing, and I hate it

Jay

@ntoskrnl So what you’re saying is whatdoesthe.foxsay is a perfectly valid domain name?

@WhiteCatTamer
Only if you have the obscene amounts of money it requires to convince the ICANN to formalize it.

But technically, yes.

@WhiteCatTamer @ntoskrnl
Yup! Nobody will forward it for you, but it's doable.
I worked at a shop that used .ds9 for our internal DNS TLD, and we had setups at home using the office DNS server and some cursed proxy configs to use .ds9 domain names to reach our office resources.

@ntoskrnl when did fox merge with disney. what the apocalyptic fuck

Bobcat

@ntoskrnl Try developing a clone of the world wide web, that should fix the problem

Flesh 🐀

@ntoskrnl What the shit?
A) Who the fuck gave Disney a tld?
B) Who the fuck gave Disney a tld that's literally just an animal name?

Lucky

@flesh@thicc.horse @ntoskrnl@furry.engineer disney bought out the american broadcaster FOX in 2019 (but only their studios)

Hideki Motosuwa

@ntoskrnl
Jokes on you I'll create many fox TLDs on my host file

Pusher of Pixels

@ntoskrnl Biden should register as being in their heads rent free is 'association'

Lighty

@ntoskrnl NAHHH, everyone should have the right to get a .fox domain name

Linky~

@ntoskrnl@furry.engineer I thought you have to be a fox to register .fox domain

Foxytosin 🏳️‍🌈

@ntoskrnl maaaan I didn't know this was a thing and now I'm mad about it

Andrew "Ace" Arsenault

@ntoskrnl Ewww. .fox domain names for Fox Television Network is about the lamest idea ever....

Jess🌺 :itsfree:

@ntoskrnl 🦊 I feel like there should be some "common word" rule here but, money is more important than any law or common sense

erinaceus

@ntoskrnl kind of reminds me of the .amazon TLD. Amazon (the company) registered it. Countries around the Amazon river complained, but this complaint was eventually overturned: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.amazon

Oye' I Approve, mate!
OR
Paul Ryan, on the board, CAN approve!

Spokeek

@ntoskrnl if this is a commercial TLD, they have the right to. I belive you can just pay to open a custom TLD. Go for it :akko_derp:

Nosnibor

@ntoskrnl One more reason not to trust any non-traditional TLD. There are just the wrong people messing around with them.

Flaky :blue_jay:

@ntoskrnl @volpeon on the flip side, it’s probably for the best that .bbc is restricted to the British Broadcasting Corporation.

pa27

@ntoskrnl On the bright side, that makes blocking *.fox very effective...

Éibhear 🔭
Aww. michael.j.fox would have been 1 excellent domain for the actor.
glitchcake

@ntoskrnl This is why we need to build our own DNS networks. I'm also so tired of whoever is in charge of it now.

🇩🇪 くら Woomy :disconnecting:

@ntoskrnl@furry.engineer Firefox will sign a sponsoring contract with Disney. You heard it here first

valkyrie_pilot

@ntoskrnl wait, does this mean that both Fox News and 20C Fox can register there?

Tiff

@ntoskrnl as a consolation I can offer subdomains on 🦊.it.com, only downside is mastodon idn support is buggy

luna

@ntoskrnl@furry.engineer 99% of the time the corporations don't even use their custom TLDs anyway

Ekto

@ntoskrnl The worst part in my opinion is that they dont even seem to use the TLD publically. All of us are barres from using it, just cuz they might be using that top level domain in their intranet. Evil.

Cenobyte :abunhdowohop:

@ntoskrnl That's ridiculous! One company shouldn't be allowed to control a whole tld. I guess noone's challenged that in court

Xetem

@cenobyte @ntoskrnl .amazon,.aws,.azure,.audible,.americanexpress,.android,.alibaba,.airbus,.aaa,.aarp,.adobe,.apple... can barely even get through the A's.

You go to the official list of all TLDs and you're immediately inundated with company owned TLDs. For some it makes sense, but others they've named their company something way too generic in the first place... And pay ICANN enough money to claim it for themselves.

PaddedSkew

@ntoskrnl discovered this a couple of years back, when my ex was looking get a domain name and asked if .fox was available.

Was an interesting rabbit hole to go down

#PostOfTheMonth:
If the pairing seems unexpected, it’s anything but. Rupert Murdoch, who created the Fox Broadcasting Company, runs News Corp., the media entity that in turn controls HarperCollins.

In a statement, Fox Media CEO Suzanne Scott wrote that Fox News Books will cater to the news corporation’s audience, bringing them “more of the compelling stories they’ve come to rely on Fox News Media personalities to deliver.”
