I'm contemplating whether it's worth delving into BlueSky. On one hand, their product is noticeably more convenient compared to Mastodon. On the other hand, what is BlueSky really? What is their strategy? Having secured $8 million in a seed round, they've entered a predictable game. Despite their current promises, this may lead to standard recommendation algorithms aimed at increasing advertising volume. As an entrepreneur, I understand the need to build a monetization model, and there's nothing wrong with that. But the question is: will BlueSky become yet another mass-market product that sooner or later ends up in the hands of another Elon Musk, as happened with Twitter? So I've decided for myself: BlueSky is interesting, but it's not worth fully transitioning from Mastodon just yet.

@henry I use both. Different vibes, with good people on both.

Lisa Sky

@henry fwiw, I joined both. They definitely feel differently. I get the feeling Bsky is reallllly trying to be either new, or old Twitter. I can't find a way to remove followers without blocking them.

ralen

@henry is it even opensource? or we'll get another discord or telegram like situation with enshittifying after a couple of years

Yannick

@henry I’ve got an (active) account on all 3. There’s probably going to be some consolidation in one of these (or a new one yet to emerge) at some point

Yannick

@henry X/Twitter, Mastodon and BlueSky. I also have a Nostr account but I’m not active there

Henry Fisher

@osteel I found Nostr to be an interesting tech. But I guess it's not so popular

Yannick

@henry yeah, def an interesting approach. But at the moment 99% of the users are Bitcoiners, so if you’re not really into that… might feel a bit lonely 😄

@henry Like every tech company, they burn seed money to attract a user base then eventually will make the product worse once those users are trapped. BS is so clearly running the #enshittification playbook and I'm shocked that so few are seeing it.

@henry
I'm on both. I've often wondered how Bluesky is going to stay in business, since they have no ads and still charge nothing. I'd be happy to pay $5 a month. I was for Counter Social for a couple years.

@henry I dont thgink so.
X is no longer usable, because of Musks hating stuff.
Mastodon with its decentiliced structure is also not perfect
Bluesky: they now have reached 12 Million User.

I give all a chance

@henry I personally feel like the monetization of social media is just not the right path. I’ve never really liked engaging with stuff on Twitter, especially the longer that it’s around. Same thing with FaceBook. At that point they don’t really care about what the users want. It’s about what the investors want.

They just aren’t compatible concepts.

@DeiWildcat Probably, but still a dilemma about how to pay developers, pay servers, traffic, etc. Moreover, you need to promote your network since the real value is social connections and the people who use it and if nobody knows about your social network, it doesn't matter if it's technically good enough.
