Mastodon lives in your brain due to certain associations. These associations transmit themself via word of mouth, marketing, fun images, et cetera.
Most of them die. You won't remember a sticker on a garbage can besides a starbucks. But herpahs you will remember the starbucks due to your association with its coffee, ambient or whatever.

Same with mastodon.
