@mttaggart @mwl i feel like with the proliferation of vanity TLDs, an argument could be made of moving it into the same vein as the new ones, no longer country-designated.

@kazy @mttaggart @mwl The problem, as I understand it, is that the two-letter domains are reserved for country codes and not under the control of ICANN, which can create and sell vanity TLDs, all of which have three or more letters. So it isn't in ICANN's power to move it because it isn't "theirs". I guess it still might happen, but the ISO (or IANA, or both) would have to agree, and there might be a stink about handing an international domain over to a US entity to sell.

My guess is that .io will remain in limbo for years: no new registrations, vague plans to end it that keep getting pushed back.
