In a move that absolutely no one asked for:
I am porting the Windows Vista/7 desktop Gadgets to Wayland with some GTK sorcery.

These widgets are actually zip files with web resources plus some metadata.
I got the Machine CPU and RAM stats working, along with some of Microsoft's weird JS API's.

Screenshot from my desktop showing 3 widgets randomly arranged. One widget is a CPU and RAM monitor shaped like engine RPM gauges. Another is an analogue clock. The last gadget is another CPU monitor with bar stats per CPU-core.

@polyfloyd i love how not-made for many gigabytes of RAM the RAM stats widget is

polyfloyd

@deneb And not only that, the CPU bar stats are also hardcoded. My laptop actually has 16 threads

@polyfloyd they probably thought they were future-proofing with 8

@deneb @polyfloyd TBF they expected all of those to be at least half-way up just to run Vista and Aero without a GPU (because they broke all the drivers). My sole experience with Vista is making a new, faster computer and it announcing, via these gauges, that it was squandering a whole core for nothing that I wanted. I formatted the drive immediately.

it will look completely and utterly out of place on my desktop but i need it

Baa

@polyfloyd@hsnl.social I hope you're porting over the numerous vulnerabilities from Windows' implementation :02chibi:

@polyfloyd i asked for this, you just didn't know this yet. ping me when you get this running on gnome

@polyfloyd Looks so cool :D
Time for someone to make a distro with a Windows 7 theme and these widgets for the people who insist on staying on windows 7 XD

Temmie

@nima @polyfloyd My current Plasma setup uses an entire Windows 7 Aero look! I'm in the process of moving so my computer is off right now but I will get back to this as soon as I can

@polyfloyd@hsnl.social Damn I didn't know I missed these Gadgets so much before reading this message, thank you 😭

@polyfloyd the vista era was when i really started to look into switching to linux full time. the irony with that was that i actually found the vista hate to be overblown. i found it to be fine, good even. but i happened at the time to start believing that the best way to make the world better was to spend as little money on anything as possible as an act of rebellion. anyway. i got of topic there a little bit. i think celebrating the things vista got right is a good thing

econads

@FlexFoot @polyfloyd celebrating the things anything gets right is a good thing

@polyfloyd I didnt ask but damn THIS IS FUCKING BASED.

It's still super limited in functionality and only runs on whatever GTK-Layer-Shell supports. I doubt I will spend a more time on this than a few hours per week.

But you can play with the 3 gadgets in the screenshot though. Have fun making Frutiger Aero unix porn screenshots y'all

Noam

@polyfloyd Wait is this the precursor to Microsoft immediately-deprecated windows 8 JS app platform?

em

@polyfloyd can you do Dashboard widgets next they’re also just html

Mattias Schlenker

@polyfloyd These were nice little useful tools. I did a few articles for printed magazines back then.

mirth

@polyfloyd I love it. I'm curious how big the delta would be to do Konfabulator widgets.

RπŸ’½nflaix

@polyfloyd ooh do i miss that CPU gauge, thanks for doing miracles here!

cibyr

@polyfloyd that's... actually pretty rad. Nice work!

sebi

@polyfloyd I dreamed of it since so long 😭

Pixel Doge

@polyfloyd it should be possible to do something similar for the MacOS X Dashboard widgets from the early 2000s, they were also web stuff rendered by shapeless windows.

gudenau

@polyfloyd This is what we needed but no one was brave enough to ask for.

@polyfloyd vista cpu gauge my beloved........... it lived right alongside my yahoo widgets

wandy_dev

@polyfloyd oh my goodness, core memory unlocked

Alessio :linux:

@polyfloyd @cassidy my god that vroom widget and the feelings it brings back

Ret

@polyfloyd @yaakov that analog clock always had quite a nice aesthetic to me…

SquidHominid

@polyfloyd You're right, I didn't ask for this, but if I'd thought of it and I knew that it was possible I absolutely would have.

DRAKONIC

@polyfloyd puzzle widget?? can the puzzle widget be ported with this??

Deuchnord

@polyfloyd no one asked for it, because no one knew we needed this 🀩

Ripp_

@polyfloyd valid as fuck
Keep doing weird things that absolutely no one asked for, I'm sure someone loves the heck out of this

polyfloyd

Was not expecting this to blow up 😬

:D

GlitchyZorua

@polyfloyd wait, where is the puzzle game widget?!! :(

bluestarultor

@polyfloyd Awesome!

I wish Win10 had this stuff. And desktop sticky notes. And the ability to tablet scribble on the desktop. Windows has had so many sweet features.
