In a move that absolutely no one asked for:
I am porting the Windows Vista/7 desktop Gadgets to Wayland with some GTK sorcery.

These widgets are actually zip files with web resources plus some metadata.
I got the Machine CPU and RAM stats working, along with some of Microsoft's weird JS API's.

Screenshot from my desktop showing 3 widgets randomly arranged. One widget is a CPU and RAM monitor shaped like engine RPM gauges. Another is an analogue clock. The last gadget is another CPU monitor with bar stats per CPU-core.

@polyfloyd i love how not-made for many gigabytes of RAM the RAM stats widget is

polyfloyd

@deneb And not only that, the CPU bar stats are also hardcoded. My laptop actually has 16 threads

@polyfloyd@hsnl.social I hope you're porting over the numerous vulnerabilities from Windows' implementation :02chibi:

@polyfloyd Looks so cool :D
Time for someone to make a distro with a Windows 7 theme and these widgets for the people who insist on staying on windows 7 XD

@polyfloyd@hsnl.social Damn I didn't know I missed these Gadgets so much before reading this message, thank you 😭

@polyfloyd the vista era was when i really started to look into switching to linux full time. the irony with that was that i actually found the vista hate to be overblown. i found it to be fine, good even. but i happened at the time to start believing that the best way to make the world better was to spend as little money on anything as possible as an act of rebellion. anyway. i got of topic there a little bit. i think celebrating the things vista got right is a good thing

@polyfloyd I didnt ask but damn THIS IS FUCKING BASED.

It's still super limited in functionality and only runs on whatever GTK-Layer-Shell supports. I doubt I will spend a more time on this than a few hours per week.

But you can play with the 3 gadgets in the screenshot though. Have fun making Frutiger Aero unix porn screenshots y'all

Noam

@polyfloyd Wait is this the precursor to Microsoft immediately-deprecated windows 8 JS app platform?

em

@polyfloyd can you do Dashboard widgets next they’re also just html

Mattias Schlenker

@polyfloyd These were nice little useful tools. I did a few articles for printed magazines back then.

@polyfloyd I love it. I'm curious how big the delta would be to do Konfabulator widgets.

cibyr

@polyfloyd that's... actually pretty rad. Nice work!

@polyfloyd ooh do i miss that CPU gauge, thanks for doing miracles here!

Pixel Doge

@polyfloyd it should be possible to do something similar for the MacOS X Dashboard widgets from the early 2000s, they were also web stuff rendered by shapeless windows.

@polyfloyd This is what we needed but no one was brave enough to ask for.
