@ErikUden FBI being mad cuz Assange is doing some sightseeing in London

⏚ Antoine Chambert-Loir

@ErikUden I'd like to see how the main CEOs and shareholders of Wiley, hachette, Elsevier spend their money.

@antoinechambertloir the FBI really shows pictures of some dope ass nature or maybe hotel, but still proletarian holidays, and says “look at how luxuriously they spend their money!!” wtf...

All journals have higher profit margins than big tech companies. Their CEOs got super Yachts and shit. What is wrong with the FBI

@ErikUden @antoinechambertloir thats just a normal holiday anywhere in Europe...

Most of what I've got from these places are scans of 1960s-90s books on cars and motoring, long out of print, many of the authors are deceased (and made a good living as motoring journalists), the publishers have lost out on 0,00€

funbaker #AssangeIsNotGuilty

@ErikUden @antoinechambertloir the organization which pushed Aaron Swartz into Suicide? Yeah...

@ErikUden @antoinechambertloir their target audience is the sort of bougie person, the sort who in any ancient fairytale would have been the wicked stepmother, cruel dying king or anthropophagous monster but in america is considered a perfectly normal standard human being, who goes absolutely frothing mad at the thought that someone on food stamps might be buying bubble gum with it

you can check this yourself here: z-lib.org

I do not think these people are cybercriminals. They are the best we got to help information preservation (next to the Internet Archive) in the 21st century.

The fact they had to mention that these people are Russian also strikes me as odd. They don't even seem to be government affiliated, I'm pretty sure the FBI would've said so if there was even a slight hint of that.

While OpenAI can freely use all copyrighted material and make billions off of it, these people giving it out for free are supposed “criminals”. Aaron Schwartz didn't die for this.

@ErikUden In the spirit of "piracy is curation", folks may want to know that Z Library has a lot of domain redundancy and that there is a reddit forum that usually has pretty good information about which ones are currently working.

@ErikUden I guess we'll just have to rely on Anna for the foreseeable future: annas-archive.org/

Dawid

@ErikUden as with everything. If Americans are <insert almost anything here> - their government is not doing anything. But if anyone from any other country is doing <insert the same thing>, then it’s real shit and they have to act.

TikTok - bad, Instagram Reels or Youtube Shorts - good
OpenAI, Google, etc. using copyrighted materials? Nothing. Someone else is doing the same? Real shit.

@ErikUden

gibts da nicht "fair use"?
die machen ja kein geld mit dem content selbst 🤔

Hannah (Low Power Mode) 🪫

locastan

@pmj @ErikUden
Das Problem sind da auch die großen Publisher und Journale wie Wiley, Elsevier, Nature etc. deren Paper und Bücher dann nicht nur gegen Kohle für die Wissenschaft verfügbar sind. Zum Glück gibt es noch sci-hub.

Red Lucy 🏳️‍⚧️ :lesbian_flag:

@ErikUden the fuck? When i saw that screenshot i thought that was a joke.

tsia

@ErikUden „this is how they are spending it“? Really? That feels like shady campaigning from the FBI. Also: do the content owners spend their money on anything different? (The rainbow is a nice touch though)

Wayne Werner

@tsia_ @ErikUden I like that apparently Z-lib is bad but Walmart and Amazon stealing from taxpayers by making their employees do a poverty, and building super yachts is good.

Nevermind the folks behind the collapse of Red Lobster, Kaybee Toys, Toys R Us, and /so much more/

Christal

@ErikUden
I just want to add that its not zlib.net

So this is not the open source programming gzip and unzip Web page...

@ErikUden to secure a working link to the z lib archive, search telegram. Connect with their channel & obtain the latest valid link.

I would concur w their ethos, information should be free. Not locked by govts & corporations.

I will not argue w you if you disagree. You're wrong.

@ErikUden@mastodon.de appalling that they're going for the appeal to mistrust of foreigners and appeal to crab-bucket mentality

Lily

@ErikUden
why does it look like the "stop doing blank" meme???

@lily @ErikUden STOP DOING HOLIDAYS

RUSSIANS WERE NOT SUPPOSED TO HAVE FUN

@ErikUden

> The fact they had to mention that these people are Russian also strikes me as odd.

Well, not really all that surprising to me.

You see, according to the newest popular consensus, all Russians are 100% evil always. Each and every one of us starts their day with eating a baby, and no afternoon is complete without torturing a kitten.

The mere fact of a person being born or existing within the borders of a certain country disqualifies them from being viewed as anything other than the enemy to the humanity as a whole.

All of this is absolutely logical, is based on indisputable facts and is not chauvinistic hatemongering whatsoever.

God forbid those mmmhhh-onsters make the knowledge available to all, and worse yet - have a good time while doing it, that'd be a disaster.

odd might not be the word anyone who remembers the japanese internment camps might use 💀
Eniko | Kitsune Tails out now!

@ErikUden oh no they have a camper trailer! they must be bloody billionaires

Jonathan Hartley

@ErikUden what absolute fucking dorks the FBI are being here. What kind of idiot do you have to be to imagine that presenting zlib like this makes them look bad? Go shut down all the billion dollar silicon valley darlings doing the exact same thing, but worse, at industrial scale, then come back here and we can talk about this. You are being stooges for the rich & powerful by stamping on everyone else's interests.

Jonathan Hartley

@ErikUden Also, they spent the money on... rainbows? How do some people's minds even work?

🇵🇸 Álvaro González

@ErikUden Is that a real FBI message or a parody? It barely looks as if adults were involved in its creation.

Ben F. Maier

@ErikUden as a published scientist who receives zero revenue from any of the work I've published with for-profit academic journals, and not even that, had to pay for said publications with public funds (yes, this is how it works): Fuck publishing houses like Elsevier and the likes and I have absolutely no moral problem with how those supposed cybercriminals spend their money

winter éclairwolf :trans_furr_white:

@ErikUden smh these Russian Cybercrime Hackers getting expensive face-blurring surgeries

Kookie 🍪 Free Palestine 🇵🇸

@ErikUden Ah yes when I think "evil crime family" I think "going camping"

SuperDicq

@ErikUden@mastodon.de Yeah that just looks like regular holiday photos to me, nothing extravagant.

I know people here on a median salary who own a little boat or a caravan.

Jo

@ErikUden

How they spend it, LLM companies are stealing your stuff.

Bezos, Zuck, Altman, Pichai

Jo

@ErikUden

Really how they are spending it.

@JessicaTaylor @ErikUden exactly

if these were the pictures that followed that text there would have been some logical connection to the outrage they want the reader to feel

what they actually posted implies that the zlib guys are getting so little money from it that they can't possibly have been in it *for* the money and therefore deserve even more respect

Jiub :verifiedenby: :verifiedtrans: :verified_estrogen:

@ErikUden lmao honestly this makes me feel better about what the z library founders are doing with their money (which is from ad revenue or smth? never used the site) a lot of middle class people have identical looking holiday photos

fuck the FBI, just another type of pig looking out for the interests of capital

ENIGMATICO :heartbleed:

@ErikUden@mastodon.de At least they are not killing anyone, they are only spreading knowledge... unlike "other" people. And AFAIK, z-library complied and deleted a bunch of books under a DMCA.

Which is why I started using Anna's archive.

Tuna

@ErikUden@mastodon.de DON'T GIVE YOUR MONEY TO EVIL RUZZIAN CYBER CRIMINALS. GIVE IT TO MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE̶E̷E̵E̶E̶E̵E̷̺͌Ḛ̶̆͋E̶̱̜̾E̶̱͚͒̕E̶̻͗̾Ẻ̸̖̹͝Ḛ̷͈͋̏Ê̸͉̥Ȩ̵̨͈̞̜̘̻̲͇̯͙́̒̾̀̈́Ę̵͉̹̭̏̊̆͑̀͌È̵̖̗̰̣̟͚̑̂̎͊̉̓͌͘͘̚E̷̟̒̇̂̂̐́̀̒̽Ę̴̫̩̠̯̪̈͌̋͋͆̈́̈́̒̕̕͝É̷̝͙̲̝͋͝

@ErikUden the FBI be like "Woah that's an expensive rainbow"

mmu_man

@ErikUden like, they wouldn't dare showing how Elsevier spends our money?

swagg boi :mastoiddong_gold:

@ErikUden Wow, and here I am working hard to save up enough to purchase a rainbow of my own before I die

Григорий Клюшников

Yeah right, don't give money to regular people having regular vacations while also helping make knowledge more accessible. Instead, give it to corporations that already have orders of magnitude more money than they know what to do with, and themselves contribute almost nothing of value to the society.

medvedych

@ErikUden looks like they not very rich cybercriminals.
And photos look more Swedish/Finnish than Russian

Григорий Клюшников

medvedych, it can very well be somewhere around St Petersburg, it's not like the natural landscapes change when you cross the Finnish border
