@catsalad @LostTrainDude Disk defrag is one of the most boring games I have ever played. The first turn takes forever to complete!

@catsalad @LostTrainDude It's funny, but I think my favorite part about this is that they used one of int10h's fonts. One of my favorites even. (Well, Flexi seems to work best for actual OS usage, but that's a good one for something that can be used in a specific use-case like this.)

"Yeah, payin' the bills with my mad programming skills
Defraggin' my hard drive for thrills"

I can't lie, I used to enjoy watching the defragger go to town on a hard drive.

@analogfusion

Nowadays, Windows defrag doesn't display the blocks like this, and Linux and macOS try not to let fragmentation happen in the first place. End of an era. 😢

But... But... How is it defrag without the blocks!

@catsalad thank you, somebody has to do it <3

@catsalad OMG, I don't know if this was ever actually possible with a defrag tool, but manual defragmenting or a fake manual defragmenting with a mouse cursor hopping around pretending to be a human doing the work is so funny to me. 🤣

@catsalad Damn, I would make a pot of coffee and watch this on a rainy morning.

@catsalad I felt like the smartest man in the world when I did this back in the day. I could tell my friends “see, what I’m doing here is reorganizing my entire hard disk to speed up access and maximize my remaining space” and they’d stare at me with dead eyes and say “we getting beers or not, nerd?”

DelRider

@Unabart @catsalad And for all the times I defragged, I never once saw an increase in I/O. My cynical self thought it was a lark that OS designers put in there and had a laugh every time it was used.

Dr. Unabart :vepi: :jrbd:

@DelRider @catsalad I always felt it was faster on my old 386, but let’s face it, it’s faster in speeds humans can’t process. But I really wanted to believe!

Raven Luni

@catsalad Manual defrag? How can you tell which ones are supposed to be contiguous?

SiliconFarmer

@RavenLuni @catsalad

I was thinking the fragments should be color coded by file.

nerdwoman

@catsalad I miss this, it was so relaxing to just watch and listen to the defrag.

@catsalad

It just struck me how long it’s been since I last used Windoze! “Mid-noughts” as I recall, ‘cept for a few IT checks on Mom’s PC.
