Dear Game Devs,

Please please please let me access the options/settings as soon as the game loads.

Don't make me sit through a prologue, or intro, or tutorial of any kind. Just let me adjust the audio/graphics/accessibility options ASAP and then I'll look at all of your fun informative stuff, I swear.

On my knees,
Syl

P.S. Streamers would also appreciate it if you didn't force any games to be fullscreen mode only, ever. Why is this a thing.

Syl :twitch:

@16bityeti I honestly do not play any games that are full-screen only ahaha. If the ctrl+enter trick doesn't work, I refund.

16BitYeti:HH::steamdeck2:

@sylphrin 100% with you, my only exception is handhelds, but for PC, if there’s not even a windowed setting… I don’t touch those.

Martijn Frazer

@sylphrin the worst kind: always fullscreen, can’t change the resolution

Syl :twitch:

@Tijn Yup, I usually refund games that do this haha

Martijn Frazer

@sylphrin I get the game dev urge to make the experience smooth for the player, but they have to understand that providing options is helping rather than hurting this.

Tatra

@sylphrin I completely agree, and likewise - Games that have no fullscreen mode and a fixed resolution. Please do not make me play your game in a tiny window in the middle of my desktop!

Sqaaakoi :flagEnby:

@sylphrin Do games that lack the ability to manually resize the window count?

Niko :neofox_flag_nb_256: :neofox_flag_trans_256:

@sylphrin if i can’t get through your intro because your game defaults to ultra settings and has awful performance i’m just gonna refund it tbh

@niko@furry.engineer @sylphrin@mstdn.games me having to sit through 640x480 because it didn't detect my GPU but it can run on ultra settings
way too common for old games

Efi (nap pet) 🦊💤

@sylphrin in addition to this, I would make all intro/cutscene material skippable and available elsewhere, replayable
I was thinking about this the other day, and maybe even have optional scenes that you skip by choosing a dialogue option
like going back to bed right at the start of deltarune

Syl :twitch:

@efi Yes! I seen this kind of thing in a very small number of games and it's such a nice feature, I wish it was more widely adopted

@sylphrin I would add that options should be available before audio plays.

This was particularly vexing with almost every Unreal 4 (or was it 3.5?) engine game, which wouldn't respect audio-levels during all of the incessant logos on launch.

Syl :twitch:

@RogDolos Definitely! The game audio is usually way too loud for me, I often have to mute the game or take my headphones off until I can get to the settings

niarbeht

@sylphrin also, make the menu always available. It’s so damn painful when I can’t get to it.

amy

@sylphrin@mstdn.games I cannot enjoy your beautifully crafted intro sequence if you have defaulted the audio to “hope you didn’t want your hearing back”, actually

If you want people to watch and enjoy your sequence, allow them to adjust things to their liking. Audio is the biggest problem for this for me

Cheri sand witch edition

@sylphrin also being able to pause in cutscene to adjust sound or graphics settings or turning on captions (instead of the pause button ireversibly skipping the cutscene)

Richard Hendricks

@sylphrin For the love of God, make sure audio settings change the intro sound, too. And don't make it a super obnoxious unskippable guitar chord!

Syl :twitch:

@hendric Yes!! The worst games I've noticed for this so far are Overcooked 2 and Stardew Valley. I love both of these games but that particular problem makes me want to slap someone

Amber Moon

@sylphrin@mstdn.games I hate it when they do that. Honestly stuff like this made stop playing the game entirely.

Quad
@sylphrin The worst is games that think it's cool to not have a main menu at first startup. So the game just launches straight into 720p resolution and potato quality settings because the game thinks anything linux is a steam deck
SuperDicq

@sylphrin@mstdn.games I remember I had to complete the entire full tutorial race in "Split/Second: Velocity" at a 640x480 resolution while being forced into fullscreen mode on the wrong monitor.

It made me so mad that I was forced to do this before I could "unlock" the actual settings menu that it kinda ruined my first impression of the game.

Haelwenn /элвэн/ :triskell:
@sylphrin kind of thing that sometimes makes me miss launchers where you could change the settings.
fabiosantoscode

@sylphrin oh yes please. And while you're at it please load things such as the volume setting before blasting your main menu song

Syl :twitch:

@fabiosantoscode Yes! I have been absolutely deafened by it in Overcooked 2 and Stardew Valley, I've gotten into the habit of taking off my headphones when I load those games now haha

Thor A. Hopland

@sylphrin
Game dev: "I'm sorry, but I'm confused, so I made an intro for the option screen as well".

Syl :twitch:

@hopland instructions unclear, settings is now part of NG+

Thor A. Hopland

@sylphrin performance mode hidden behind NG++. Good luck playing the game with ray tracing enabled on a potato, loser.

Mateusz Olech

@sylphrin
counterargument: block options until you beat first 30% of your game and randomise them after every start. /obvious sarcasm

i would give a lot if we could bring back config windows that open before starting the game itself

Syl :twitch:

@astromateusz ahahaha okay wait I know you're being sarcastic but if someone made a mod for randomizing settings on every stage/level, I would 100% play that 😂

Richard Bairwell

@sylphrin And if your game needs a user to login, please have the login section on the launcher so I can easily use my password manager instead of having to alt-tab between my desktop and the full-screen game (and the resulting screen resolution changes) to copy the username, password and then the emailed OTP.

SarahGreyWolf

@sylphrin my addition to this is, please set your audio by default to like 50%, your 100% is probably gonna be too loud for some people, especially depending on their audio setup, 50% is a perfect middle ground and people can adjust it after the fact

Radgryd

@sylphrin Getting ready to get my ears blasted on every first startup. 👂🏻👂🏻👂🏻

Johanna Janiszewski

@sylphrin I even started to open the settings menu in order to show the accessibility options because people did not know they existed 😅

Syl :twitch:

@JohannaMakesGames oh nooo! I love it when accessibility options are included

Aknorals⚑Ⓐ 🏴

@sylphrin The 2004 visual novel Fate/Stay Night autoplays the prologue on first play. The prologue lasts at least an hour. Any attempt to go to the main menu restarts the prologue.

Like, how do I exit the game properly?

Like, you can save and load saves, but I prefer to do that from the main menu.

Also the 2024 remaster is still like this.

Yuki 膤 ❄️ 🏳️‍⚧️

@sylphrin@mstdn.games game devs in 2024 assuming you have one or two identical screens at most that runs at an ideal 1080p, and you want to play full screen on any of them

also game devs in 1999 assuming you have one chunky CRT, setting the resolution to 640x480 is just gonna make it faster, and higher resolutions are just a courtesy for higher-end graphic cards
