Thinking about doing a one year without buying stuff challenge. Only buy something if it's to replace something that broke down, or is in some other way completely unavoidable. No new physical things, paying software, subscriptions, etc. Might be an interesting experiment...

Not saying that buying stuff is bad or that this is a good way to live (it's not, much better to enjoy life!), but as cost of living is killing us these days, I'm thinking that maybe I can lean into it and learn something about myself in the process.

@gosha There is so much satisfaction to be derived from that moment you decide to make do with what you have at hand, and of replacing something only when it has truly disintegrated beyond repair. I think it’s a good experiment!

@gwil I believe it! I think I will definitely do it, just need to figure out the exact rules I set for myself.

@gosha The only new things I have bought in the past few years are books (a few each year), art materials (once a year typically, mostly paper and/or fabric) and potted plants. I don't feel like I'm missing anything at all.
Maybe you feel it's not a good way to live for you, but it definitely works for me.
I do spend money on non-essential things though: going for coffee with a friend, taking the train to go hiking.

@wim_v12e I guess I meant that "feeling constrained" is not a good way to live. If you don't feel constrained, all the more power to you! And the feeling of constraint can definitely be worked on over time, too

@gosha I think everyone always has to live within constraints. Society imposes constraints on us, as does our physical situation. But I guess you mean the constraint of wanting something and not being able to afford it?
