And I, too, was wrong because the code above doesn't generate pink color. Quake with it's default palette can't provide pink. Half-Life 1 however, really made it pink by setting 255-th color in the palette pink before uploading it.

So the checkboard was made in Quake but Half-Lfie 1 made it pink.
so where do you think famous missing texture pink checkerboard came from

On this occasion have #UnlockedMemories. Back in the olden days, in some games (not even sure if it was a few, but Return to Castle Wolfenstein for sure - it's on Q3, right?) - when you were hit by an enemy missile, textures would appear in the explosion cloud for a moment with... Console output. White text on a black background, rotated at a random angle.

I think it was some video card glitch, but it looked very interesting.

В стародавние времена в некоторых играх (даже не уверен, что в нескольких, но в Return to Castle Wolfenstein точно — она на Q3 же?) — когда в тебя попадала вражеская ракета, в облаке взрыва на мгновение появлялись текстуры с... Выводом консоли. Белый текст на черном фоне, повернутый под рандомным углом.

Думаю, это был какой-то глюк видеокарты, но смотрелось очень оригинально.
