@simon fwiw, "Meet On-The-Go" is a feature that turns off video on a Google Meet video call and mutes you with the thought that you're probably walking with your phone in your pocket.

@ian that makes sense! Shame they couldn’t explain that in the weird dialog that popped up

@simon the approval experience on Android is similarly weird. There's definitely some product manager deep in the depths of Google scratching their head about why usage is so low on this feature.

Apparently it’s for when you’re in a meeting while on a walk - good luck guessing that from the dialog though! social.modest.com/@ian/1130813

@simon @ian even if I used Meet from the Gmail app, I’m not sure I’d trust Google to have any of that health information.

@simon I don't allow any Google apps on my iPhone. Unfortunately that means I can only join a Meet while mobile if it has dial-in enabled, which is only for Workspace accounts.

@simon Yes yes, this is certainly the only thing they will use that data for. Guaranteed! Not …

Jamie Lawrence

@simon auto-cancel the next meeting because I’m too tired

@simon
I use this mode on the Pixel (where it doesn't need this grotesquely broad permission bundle IIRC).

If you join a Meet from home and hop into your car and start driving for e.g. the on-the-go mode will switch the UI and makes the Mute and other buttons nice and big and easily accessible. It's actually quite nice.
