Processing this map took longer than I expected because it was divided into 10,710 tiles of 256Γ256 pixels each. I had to write a JS script to fetch all of these tiles and stitch them into larger tiles of 7,680Γ7,680-pixel images before combining then cropping them using GIMP into the final 22,860Γ30,116-pixel behemoth. I ran into various memory limitations because Firefox and GIMP had trouble working with these huge images. 3/3 |
This map is the one that is now being championed by retired Supreme Court Justice #AntonioCarpio alongside the 1734 Pedro Murillo Velarde map to bolster the territorial claims of the #Philippines over Scarborough Shoal and the Kalayaan Islands.
The map was first published by the DireccΓon de HidrografΓa (Hydrography Directorate) of #Spain πͺπΈ in 1875 and then republished by the #UnitedStates πΊπΈ War Department in 1902 with annotated telegraph and cable lines.
