Sherlock Holmes, casually taking cocaine to “escape from the commonplaces of existence.”

@rek I always wondered about that. From the descriptions I've got from others, it seems like unlike say opiates which take you out of the world cocaine makes you experience it more intensely. Has it been described to me wrong or does he just channel that energy into going into his own head and thinking about chess problems really hard?

R E K

@mcc It seems like he uses cocaine in the absence of stimulating cases, so... out of boredom?

@rek yeah, that's what i remember. what i'm trying to figure out, does that actually work? like, take cocaine and get *less* bored by being cooped up in a cluttered apartment?

"A modern, hi-tech drug for the most modern and technologically innovative of detectives."

Very interesting how Arthur Conan Doyle had to wean Sherlock off it, after being made aware of the risks of taking cocaine.

@rek "I can see it clearly Waston, as clear as day, I.. "

"It's clear as day my good man"

I faintly remember the modern series but i can imagine hsherlock doing that.

Interpretation 2
Oh dear, in the old series? How long was cocaine legal despite the knowledge of its efdects? Probably not as song as with cigarettes

@kapunta It was "hip" in 19th century England, it wasn't all that well understood, at least not until the early 20th century.

It is neat that Arthur Conan Doyle, realizing its dangers, changed this in the story, with Watson helping to wean him off the drug.

@rek In 'The Sign of the Four', he referred to injecting himself with "a seven percent solution". Yikes.
