Why is it that cats were so often portrayed as villians while mice were portrayed as their innocent victims?

As a kid, when I read Beatrix Potter’s book “Tailor of Gloucester”, I connected with Simpkin the cat who was left out in the snow on Christmas. Sure the mice might have fixed the mayors coat but they also probably pissed all over it, like they do, and probably gave the mayor typhus. 😆
