Ivory's upcoming new navigation design is currently available to test on TestFlight!

While the design of the navigation bar has changed over the years, the core concept of how it functioned has been the same since Tweetbot v1.0 way back in 2011! We've redesigned and rebuilt Ivory’s navigation system from the ground up to be faster, easier to use, and more configurable.

This will ship in Ivory v2.2 along with some other great new features!

@ivory i like what i've seen in the current beta

Tim Johnsen

@ivory love it! Curious why y’all aren’t using a standard context menu for the overflow menu though

Ivory by Tapbots :emoji_wink:

@timonus We love torturing ourselves with more complexity. 😅

Moritz Dietz

@ivory Nice! Those are some really good changes

Arch :arch:

@ivory I would pay a small fee for the option to use the old Tweetbot v1.0 design as the navigation bar theme :p

acb

@ivory Any chance of making expanding a post or opening a CW expand the post inline rather than pushing a new view controller? Reading a 10+-post thread each of which is in need of expansion gets a bit tiring after a while, and the VC push adds friction to the reading experience

Ivory by Tapbots :emoji_wink:

@acb v2.2 will also auto expand all posts within a thread so that won't be an issue anymore.

acb

@ivory It would still be nice if expanding a content warning would just show the content on the current screen. Saves one having to reach for the back button and all that. (I believe Ice Cubes does this.)

Ivory by Tapbots :emoji_wink:

@acb yes, but that requires a ton of work on our end and there are currently so many more important things we need to do first. It's on our list to revisit how they expand, but for now we think this solution works well enough. We will get to details like this in time.

acb

@ivory Fair enough. Glad to hear it’s on your list

zmknox

@ivory in trying it yesterday, I really wish I could tap and hold on the more icon to have the menu pop up, and then release on an item in the menu to go to it, like most other iOS context menus

zmknox

@ivory also, secondary unrelated suggestion: I wish there was a third tier besides being in the bar vs the in the menu for stuff I just want to hide. I don't need the mentions tab because I use the notifications one, and I never use lists, so it'd be nice to just hide those away.

Ivory by Tapbots :emoji_wink:

@zmk We thought about that and might still consider it someday. The main reason we didn't is because many users tend to set and forget and one day look for something and think it doesn't exist at all. Not having that option was mainly to prevent future support headaches. 😅

Joe Rosensteel 🏳️‍🌈

@ivory Thanks for this explanation. I’m on the TestFlight and couldn’t figure out how to turn the labels off because I thought they were under Settings -> Display. I didn’t realize the “…” menu had another Settings in it. Could we consolidate the Settings?

Ivory by Tapbots :emoji_wink:

@joesteel We don't want too many settings in one place. It becomes a mess to find things. I can understand the initial confusion, but the configure button right in the menu of the navigation seems like the best and fastest place to make changes to this area.

Ivory by Tapbots :emoji_wink:

@betaphish yes we currently have a bunch of testers. We tend to open it up when we need more testers to give feedback.

BoxOfRain

@ivory
Nice!

Is it expected that the beta does not recognise an actual current subscription?

Ivory by Tapbots :emoji_wink:

@boxofrain Yes. Completely unrelated. You just have to subscribe in testflight (it's a fake sub).

Manfred :verified_breze:

@ivory where I can find that early adopter Tweetbot theme in Ivory 🫣 😁 I would buy it as in-app purchase @mark

Erlend

@ivory I’d say this is moving a bit closer to Mona… And I love it! 🙌🏻

(Do full-width timeline content and reverse timeline next. ☺️🙏🏻)

peter honeyman

@ivory est-ce qu’il y a une one-touch UI pour translate? (ha ha je parle français comme un bébé 👶)

Ivory by Tapbots :emoji_wink:

@peterhoneyman You can configure the short right-swipe action on a post to translate in the behavior options.

Luke Kanies

@ivory does this redesign mean the iPad’s nav bar finally catches up with the phone?

I read far more on this than on my phone, and it sucks feeling like a second class citizen, with nav items I can’t get rid of but never use. Most notifications show up twice as a result, and it’s laborious.

Ivory by Tapbots :emoji_wink:

@lkanies Yes the iPad and Mac sidebars will work exactly the same. 🙂 But also remember the mentions tab will be going away as we plan to tackle our notifications tab update soon.

Daron Brewood 🇬🇧

@ivory Hoping one day that more text slots will be available for European users..

Bernd Folberth

@ivory 👍 Are similar changes coming to the macOS App as well?

Ivory by Tapbots :emoji_wink:

@bfo Yes the concept will be exactly the same on iPadOS and MacOS.

Bernd Folberth

@ivory But not on Testflight, yet - right? On iOS I see build 21045 in Testflight, on macOS build 21000 is the newest version available.

Ivory by Tapbots :emoji_wink:

@bfo Correct. We are still working on the Mac update.

MacSnider

@ivory Restoring subscription doesn’t work.
iPhone 15 Pro Max, iOS 18 Public Beta
(Yeah maybe it’s a beta bug)

Ivory by Tapbots :emoji_wink:

@MacSnider Is that testflight? If so it's unrelated to your app store sub. just have to resub (it's fake).

Fedor Sit 🇷🇺

@ivory New tabbar is really awesome. I’m happy as a child. For me, Ivory updates, just like Telegram updates, are likewise a personal tech New Year’s Eve. Every time, there is something new and useful to enjoy. Congratulations with beta release. For me, it is rather stable and solid. Thanks for great app, and be happy. :blobcatheart:

Ivory by Tapbots :emoji_wink:

@jakeyounglol It's not that. If we let everyone test the app, we'd go out of business because very little would continue to support us. So it's completely based on how active our beta testers are when we release important new features. 🙂

Chad :vbike:

@ivory @jakeyounglol I just gave up my test spot, so maybe there’s now an opening (if it works that way). 👍

jake (he/him) 🇵🇸

@ivory oh yeah i forgot beta testers get free in app purchases

Joe Fabisevich :verified:

@ivory Will there be a way to hide the More button? It's been less than a day but it's driving me a bit mad. 😭

Joe Fabisevich :verified:

@ivory You could still have an entry point to customize the tab bar in Settings. I haven't adjusted my tab bar in years (aside from setting things up from scratch when I've had to reinstall), I can't imagine it's something people are doing often. I'm all for having it as an option for people who want access to more than five tabs, but practically speaking I only need 4, and leave a 5th that I mostly ignore, but now will have an extra button that's always there.

Ivory by Tapbots :emoji_wink:

@mergesort Great for power users, but a nightmare overall for supporting new users. With an option like this, users will hide the more button, forget that it ever existed and when we add an important new tab button (or if they need to access a button that was hidden), they will never know it exists. Will think about it though. Definitely not something for this release. Our old tab bar system has been a support nightmare for many, many years. New users just never knew sections of the app existed.

BenRiceM

@ivory @mergesort I want to second this request. The new More button feels incredibly clunky compared to the elegance of the old design. Being able to adjust the tab bar on the fly, with a single gesture, was great, and now I feel like I’m forced to chose between primary and secondary tabs.

Jeff Watkins

@ivory @mergesort I haven't had a chance to use the new button, but I might recommend taking a step back and asking whether a tab bar is the right affordance for PRIMARY navigation to all the great functionality in Ivory.

Certainly, it's ideal for quickly jumping between sections. But if users are missing out on functionality, then maybe it's time to rethink navigation.

Ragashingo

@ivory I miss the old metal glowy tabs. Can we have those? :)

Jeff

@ivory That menu listing looks like how @MonaApp’s app looks. Glad to see all of these options!

Primal Anomaly

@ivory this is perfect. I really miss the days when every iOS app had a customisable tab bar!

Ed PDX

@ivory there's a hidden button somewhere in the upper left that is basically "lose my place in the timeline and scroll to the latest post" - any way to turn that off?

Ivory by Tapbots :emoji_wink:

@edpdx Not a hidden button. That's the status bar (timestamp area) and is the default way to scroll to the top on iOS based on the system. But you can turn that off in the behavior settings of Ivory.

Ed PDX

@ivory right there at the top, thanks!

Nic Lake :pika:

@ivory I know you've talked in the past about the notification overlap between the Mentions and Notifications tabs; is this something being addressed in 2.2?

Ivory by Tapbots :emoji_wink:

@niclake Nope. But hopefully 2.3. That stuff is going to be tied in with support for Mastodon's upcoming "grouped notifications" feature that should also be releasing fairly soon.

Pranatharthi

@ivory Can I get access to this? Already have TestFlight

Ivory by Tapbots :emoji_wink:

@pranathar You'd have to have gotten into our beta when we had open spots.

Keir

@ivory requesting a classic theme for the tab bar

Chojubo

@ivory this looks brilliant. Looking forward to it!

Keir

@ivory really great options here - love the ability to customize these (and always have!)

Chris

@ivory hmmm… I really would prefer to keep the older way, or at least as an option.

Ivory by Tapbots :emoji_wink:

@chrisparana Unfortunately if that was the case, we'd just stop improving the app and just move on to something else. 😅 Change is tough and we can't ever make everyone happy. But we have to make improvements based on the big picture of the majority of our users, not a select few who want things to be a particular way. Live with it for a few weeks and it will become the new normal and second nature. We love the new navigation.

Thomas N :yikes:

@ivory This looks and works great!

Could there be a way to make the Mentions dot sync state with the Notifications tab’s?
I understand having a merged view in the future would also be a (better) solution

I’m 75% sold on the unread dot being on the right (I put 🏠 in the middle for thumb access)

I also feel like the …⃝ button by default could be a little less dark. Even if it’s the same gray as unselected tabs, it looks darker because it’s filled, and could be confused with the selected tab.

Ivory by Tapbots :emoji_wink:

@tomn94 Not going to deal with all the complexities of syncing those 2 tabs when one of them is going away anyways. We will be working on the notifications tab in the next big update or 2 after this one.

kcǃ

@ivory thank you for the continued attention to details! It’s much appreciated (and looking good)!!

DELETED

@ivory I‘d prefer no separator for the post button on iPhone…?

Ivory by Tapbots :emoji_wink:

@dev Then you'll have to turn off that option. 🙃

DELETED

@ivory Looking forward to it (it‘s not yet available is it?)…

DELETED

@ivory Yeah, I already found that, but there‘s show a vertical separator next to the post button. I‘d prefer having no separator between the post button and the other buttons… 🙃

Ivory by Tapbots :emoji_wink:

@dev Yes but this is how we intentionally designed it. You have to pick from one of the available options.

DELETED

@ivory I‘ll get probably used to it. On iPad there’s no separator… Anyhow, great redesign!

Ivory by Tapbots :emoji_wink:

@dev ipad is different since the post icon is pinned to the bottom. There’s generally enough space where it looks like it’s a different button.

Simon Harper

@ivory looking forward to this. Great work team @ivory 🫶🏼

PS. Any more TeatFlight invites available 😁

David Harrison

@ivory I’ve been enjoying the new nav - but you just HAD to go post a Tweetbot 1 screenshot to make me want that that back, didn’t you?

BRB - changing my Ivory icon back to the RiP icon….

Reese Armstrong :verified_su:

@ivory please allow me to resume the app at the top of the feed i will not be catching up trust

Craigosborne

@ivory can’t wait for this. Great work 👍

kaiserkiwi :kiwibird:

@ivory Oh I didn't notice I could change the count of the options. This is awesome!

Was a but annoyed as I had the profile icon on the right the whole time but with changing the count of items it's really awesome.

I like the slight design adjustments so far. It feels more complete if that makes sense?

Radu Ursache

@ivory move the “toot/create new post” button to the nav bar instead of covering the actual feed content… 99.99% of the time i don’t need to post anything so the button can be in the nav bar

SeaCaptain(Ret)

@ivory Configured with less = more is brilliant. No more fat finger ‘opps’.

Jippi 🇩🇰

@ivory love it! Any plans to add "admin" notifications(signups, spam reports, etc.) to the app? would be quite useful as an admin on the go to be notified and see them in the app, like I can on web version

Ivory by Tapbots :emoji_wink:

@jippi It's on our list to look at, but pretty low priority compared to all the work we still need to get done. But it is on our long list of improvements to make.

SkyLander

@ivory This looks great! I do have a question or I guess a request? The original version of Ivory when you went to Explore I would be able to double tap the explore to jump to the top of Popular & Trending, now it jumps you up and then brings up the keyboard to search. Could it be possible to break Popular and Trending out to another area? Or an option to not automatically bring up the keyboard?

I didn't see in the app for feature requests. And I figure it's intentional behavior.

Tommy Thorn

@ivory FEWER buttons, not less buttons

Looking forward to the update

Mike Rockwell

@ivory I’m sure you’ve received feedback on this, but just in case you haven’t, it confused me that the order of the More menu is the reverse of the order shown in the configuring screen.

But I’m loving the changes overall, keep it up!

Ivory by Tapbots :emoji_wink:

@mike The order is the same in the sense that the first item in the menu is closest to the the last icon in the navigation bar. So the first item in the menu will be closest to the button you just tapped to access that menu, if that makes sense.

Mike Rockwell

@ivory I figured it out, I was just confused when I first configured it. :)

David Harrison

@ivory @mike I understand this logic but it intuitively continues to feel reversed to me for some reason.

rob

@ivory Initial reaction was "oh no, change" but that lasted all of a minute. For me, it's a really solid improvement over the previous (already good) nav. I'm enjoying using it; nice job.

Jeroen Schaper

@ivory I’ve been liking this so far. The menu feels a bit cramped though 🤔

Ivory by Tapbots :emoji_wink:

@JeroenSchaper All still a work in progress. next update has more breathing room.

Jeremy Kelleher

@ivory Looks great!! Very excited to start using it

Dan Andrus

@ivory damn why you guys tease me with the classic nav bar that I fell in love with and will never get again?

Chase :ani_clubtwit:

@ivory Just wanted to share a little feedback that I preferred the old design. The new one reminds me of Spring (for Twitter) and is one of the reasons why I always preferred Tweetbot over Spring. The “more” button on the right seems a little cluttered and I’m not a fan of the way that menu pops up.

Great work though on continuing to update and innovate!

Mr 🥑-man

@ivory it would also be great if there was an option to disable swipe gestures on posts as I always try to navigate back with the side swipe and most of the times I accidentally actiave the reply on a random post.

Tek say vote

@ivory This looks amazing and I can’t wait to try it! But I do so wish Home, Local, and Federated could also be on separate tabs. I’m on an instance where the local timeline is an active community and it’s kind of a pain to switch between Home and Local.

Francesco Ambrosini :woem:

@ivory previous layout preferred by far.
three dots icon is so ugly compared with everything else in this stylish app.
Sorry 🖖
