Born too late to have 1982 on my birth certificate... born too soon to have 1984 on my birth certificate 😔

@darius tell me you have an ongoing twitter thread about intentionally misconstruing “tell me you’re x without telling me you’re x” posts without telling me you have an ongoing twitter thread about intentionally misconstruing “tell me you’re x without intentionally telling me you’re x” posts

There are a lot of younger people here on the fediverse. Some advice: no matter what anyone says, your 20s are, without a doubt, a time when your age starts with 2.

Now I'm in my late 30s and have some distance on my 20s. I can tell you that your age starting with 3 is something you're going to have to wait to experience until your 30s, with the obvious exception of when you were 3.

My older friends and loved ones assure me that my 40s are going to be a time of a 4 in the tens digit of my age.

@darius i wish i had known this when i was 3!

@darius I've always wondered what happens when your age starts with another digit, like… 5? It's a mystery. I just call them the unknowns

DELETED

@darius these ages are impossibly old. everyone knows the highest number is 24.

@darius Bah, any programmer worthy of the name knows that your age starting with two starts in your early 30s and doesn't end until you're nearly 50.

Librarian

@darius The logic of this is inescapable. Very compelling analysis of the human condition as viewed through the cultural lens of *checks notes* Count von Count. AH Ah ah!

@darius unless you use a base besides 10 😈

jess

@darius i can confirm there will be a 4 in the tens digit [edit to fix autocorrect]

IridisSparks

@darius Can confirm: once you exit your 30's, there's this 4 that's gonna hang out at the front of your age, for like. At least 10 years.

@darius I am in my 40s and can tell you that age isn’t, as sometimes claimed, just a number. It’s a whole series of numbers. And when you spell it out, there are letters. I expect my age to start with an “f”, in some contexts, for several more years.

Vanion

@darius Splendidly explained. I'm on my way to checking out if it is the same with the fifties, in a few years.

@darius @amberage The thing to remember about this is that it's ultimately still just a matter of perspective. Yes, some people will tell you that in your 30s, your age begins with 3, but that doesn't have to define your experience. For example, if you measure your age in Hexadecimal, you can reach your 40s before your age begins with 3!

dragfyre

@darius I can't believe you haven't considered nondecimal number bases in this post

Darius Kazemi

@dragfyre if I had 100 more characters I would have proofed it against pedants more strongly

@darius there is nothing wrong with 1983. Both my older sisters gave birth to their second children within the same week in 1983 and they grew up into fine people.

Also we had a 1983 K-car that was maybe the best family car for a long time.

So I kind of consider 1983 to be a charmed year.
