NYT:

"If you drive a car made by General Motors and it has an internet connection, your car’s movements and exact location are being collected and shared anonymously with a data broker. This practice, disclosed in a letter sent by two Democratic senators to the FTC on Friday, is yet another way in which automakers are tracking drivers, often without their knowledge."

@GottaLaff "anonymously" could easily be a negligible concept here. Generally, not more than one person travels from one house to one work location regularly, and any extra visits could be tied to that person.

Extra_Special_Carbon

@isaac @GottaLaff Right. Anonymity is a joke when the data itself is unique to you.

@GottaLaff We seem to be getting close to CaaS -Cars as a Service.

@GottaLaff

"[A]nonymously".

Is it safe to believe corporations?

@GottaLaff

Peak car enshittification and I want a dumb car with only the rear-view camera and *maybe* side traffic alerts.

@Life_is Not a lot of choices for consumers when it comes to privacy then. Being in the US, I can't get a Renault or Dacia, and I'm not touching a Stellantis product, so...BMW or Subaru? (I have a BMW now, but it's a 2016, so not really connected).

@gogojack

The choices are not to own a car or to not even use a car.

faraiwe

@GottaLaff just assume any touchscreen-tablet-on-wheels is collecting on you, so automakers can sell that data to auto insurance companies, so they can shank you by raising rates obscenely, if you slam the brakes hard even once.

@GottaLaff Ride a bike if you care about privacy

Snowshadow

@GottaLaff
Nothing about tracking is ever anonymous.
I would be concerned especially if I was a woman living in a red state.
Of course I would also be checking my insurance bill for any sudden increases.

@GottaLaff This is why I drive an ancient Corolla with roll down windows and push locks. 😁 (It’s actually bc this sucker will never die and I’m stubborn.)

Laffy

@Yup_Its_Holly I'm from Calif where it gets to be over 112, so we need air.

Holly🍁:mstdn:

@GottaLaff I have been regretting the lack of air conditioning the past few years. It’s gotten a little warmer in the summers.

@GottaLaff Remove the sim card or don't pay the cell account for it.
This is why I fix up and drive older cars.

@GottaLaff Everything technological seems to be turning evil, these days.

@GottaLaff the next fun thing of software on wheels is *support*. Windows 10 is no longer supported so you are at risk if you use it on the internet( i.e. at all).
Cell phones are just now being supported for 7 years. Do you want a car that isn't supported after just 7 years?

What happens when a car company decides to stop updating their software? Or goes out of business completely like Fisker?

Very similar to John Deere tractors that *owners* can't maintain b/c it's closed source

Insurance companies are also extremely interested in collecting data. A lot can be determined, especially in the case of accidents and, of course, general driving behavior. For example: There is a prescribed speed limit at location A. How fast was the vehicle actually traveling and is this often the case or only occasionally? Our data is worth a lot, more than we think!

Nazo

@GottaLaff I think a lot of people think "well I drive well, so I don't have to worry about it."

Putting aside all the things wrong with giving up privacy, I want to remind people that one of the things it's tracking is also when you have to dodge that crazy person who suddenly swerved into your lane without a signal and almost hit you. It doesn't know about the other person, all it knows in you suddenly slammed on your brakes instead of stopping smoothly.

Geoff Coffey

@GottaLaff What's going to happen is members of congress will grandstand about this for a week. What is not going to happen is members of congress passing a damn privacy protection law.

Magnus Ahltorp

@GottaLaff When they came for the transit users, I didn’t complain, because I drove a car.

When they came for the car people, we were so many and were so privileged, so we made them stop.

rothko

@GottaLaff not just GM -- my subaru does that too. in fact, just by getting into the car, even as a passenger, means you are automatically opting in to that agreement.

Paul_IPv6

@GottaLaff

NYT is late to the party and limiting the scope of damage. there have been slews of reports about all the major car manufacturers, various insurance companies, etc. cars are a privacy nightmare:

Amazing that old kit works and is more secure.

@GottaLaff I thought the CIA was saying not to buy Chinese cars so China couldn't spy on us?

Wondering what your privacy is worth? Honda thinks its $0.26. Hyundai thinks it's $0.61. I didn't see a value for GM but it''s most likely in that range.

That's right, they'll sell you out for less than a single dollar.

@allpoints @GottaLaff Fuck, can I put in a bid? I’d gladly pay $5 for them to opt me out of that shit. 😊

Jeaux

@GottaLaff Jokes on them… I’m always lost or driving in circles.🥴

Heatmizer_626

@GottaLaff Ford does the exact same thing. Ford keeps track of salespeople at dealerships, and they're required to set up the system with the customer's information, usually while the customer is in finance. Salespeople are required to get the car programmed one way or another, even if the car has already left the dealership

OneNYCStagehand

@GottaLaff This is why I sold my Honda Motorscooter. It had one of those Y Connect things and would drain the battery at night. Plus letting Honda (or whoever) track my movements.

Paul-Gabriel Wiener

@GottaLaff I remember when GM first introduced On*Star in their cars. "So anyone with access to their computer systems can locate my car, see what condition it's in, and remotely unlock the doors? That doesn't seem like a good idea..." The dealership did not understand my concern at all.
