A decade ago I swapped from shaving with foam and a multi blade to traditional single blade razors and soap. This was one of the best moves I ever made.

I also moved from non stick cook ware to stainless/ carbon steel. This was also one of the best things I did.

I moved from gas to induction. Full on win.

I moved from apps to notebooks. Amazing choice.

Going back to CDs.

The modern world is lying to us about everything.

@jameschip one of us! CDs are actually great, we listen to them at home. bonus is we can easily curate a rotating collection for our 5 CD changer that our 4yo can operate

@d6 I don't know why we ever navigated away from them. You get a little book with the lyrics in and everything!

I am Jack's Lost 404

@jameschip

For the longest time I tried to find an excuse to buy a tablet, but never did.

Can't say I miss it.

@jameschip am thinking of trying to find a manual clipper. Always hated the electronic ones and the manual ones seem so soothing

@jameschip I’ve been feeling a bit of FoMo seeing more people use CDs again but I don’t know, I hated them at the time. Awful plastic cases with shrunk down artwork, and the booklets always snagged and tore when taking them out. Don’t think I’ll go back.

Tapes and vinyl have their place though.

Your other points I probably agree with though I’ve yet to really try induction hobs.

@jameschip I took full advantage of the move to streaming to snap up loads of DVDs and CDs at blowout prices, and I've kept buying CDs and DVDs regularly.
The best part is you can still load up your music/movie player with your own digital if you want, or use the media.

The choice with more options is always the better choice.

I especially appreciate my DVDs when the network around here is operating poorly and Amazon starts buffering or switches to low quality mode.

@jameschip @stevelord yeah, same. It reduced my shaving bill to less than 8quid a year.

Can recommend shampoo soap bars for similar reasons. Once you find a brand you like, they’re cheap as chips.

James Chip

@klord @stevelord I can not believe how much blades and foam from a tin costs! I will look into shampoo bars, thanks for tge heads up on that one.

@jameschip
Cast iron cookware is also good. =D

@jameschip ive been trying to use a safety razor blade handle thingy lately, but im just not any good at it :( takes me 4x as long and a worse shave overall

i havent given up yet tho

James Chip

@aynish it takes a bit of learning but once it clicks it is fine. I can shave pretty fast but I often find myself going slower with it now. Kind of vecome a little self care ritual rather than a thing I just do.

I quite enjoy whipping up the lather with a brush and going through the motions. I get to slow down for just a little.

I also found that some blades worked better for me than others. Some people swear by Derby blades, but they give me shaving rash. Astra Platinums for me.

@jameschip I recently upgraded from electric to induction as well, and wow is it a huge improvement. It's one of the "modern" things that actually is better. Much more precise while being more efficient at the same time. Going from gas to induction is an even bigger improvement!

@jameschip @kirtai > I moved from apps to notebooks. Amazing choice.
If it was proprietary malware, of course switching to something that isn't designed to entrap you was an improvement.

I've found org-roam superior to easily-lost (and hard to backup) paper notes.

Even if one uses one of the proper notetaking & indexing methodologies, it's just more laborious to do it by hand.

> I also moved from non stick cook ware to stainless/ carbon steel. This was also one of the best things I did.

Nonstick was demonstrated to me as being garbage when I found out I couldn't use proper wok-cooking heats with it. And then I found out the stuff is cancerous on top of that even when it isn't cracked or visibly damaged.

A bit of oil in stainless steel is fine.

> I moved from gas to induction. Full on win.

It's also better than conventional electric, which is what I've had experience with.

So much less annoying to clean, too.

> Going back to CDs.

I prefer DRM-free lossless digital copies. Easier to backup, and easier to carry with oneself should an emergency evacuation be necessary (which with climate change making extreme events more common, looks like an eventual guarantee I'll have to deal with such things).

(And doing high-quality rips by oneself is not quite trivial, when the media is old-enough.)

Anything that can be backed up is preferable, because physical materials are cumbersome and hard to evacuate quickly. 12~16TB (used/refurbished) drives fit in a purse or backpack without issue.

Mostly the corposcum and capitalists. Because of course they do not have your best interest at heart.
