Actually it's a bit of a myth that mice are that partial to cheese.

As mouse trap bait, more effective foodstuffs include:

Peanut butter (also mixed with oatmeal);
Chocolate (e.g. Nutella);
Fat, butter, bacon;
Grains, nuts, fatty seeds

@warandpeas Caught one in a 'non killing' mousetrap in my bedroom a few years back. By the time I was in the back of the garden the little critter had already convinced me to let him go. Getting up and looking me straight in the eyes with it's little cute face did it for me. Have no idea how many of his/her offspring now live there. I often enough see and smell them around the garden shed.
