As @techcultivation has learned from insiders:

- AI has been given top priority politically (EU Commission)
- NGI and other topics have been cut from the 2025 plan to free up budget for a big AI initiative
- the decision for this was made last year and has nothing to do with the recent EU elections
- since the process is far along and there is a lot of political pressure on the AI topic, they do not see much chance for this decision to be reversed for 2025
- they do believe that NGI and open source remain a priority for the EU and will be reinstated in the 2026/27 plan
- the German government will support the reintroduction in 2026/27

@hackstub @techcultivation I hope it does come back.

What @NGIZero and @nlnet do needs to be replicated around the world.

#fosssustainability is about more than the money. It's about the community. We have very complex issues to solve and we need many minds and many lived experiences to solve them and not do further harm to our societies.

It's been amazing to see the funded projects on the NLnet site.

That's what we could lose if we don't get cascade funding back.
