@dgar OneDrive is Evil and must be stopped.

@lawrence_stevens @dgar I once lost over 300k words because Onedrive is a sick joke.

All for the best, I rewrote with a beginning, middle, and end. The result was an improvement.

But I will never trust it again.

@dgar You could drop it in this box...

@dgar
I just paid extra to have a phone with 265GB. I know it's a scam (SD cards are gigantic and practically free now? Who's gonna pay for a cloud subscription? Just remove the slot!).
But not using clouds outside my job means a lot to me.
If they ever hack my cloud, it's just a lot of photos of spines, livers, and very, very gross closeups of skin diseases. Be my guest.

@dgar
(EDITS: Fat fingers hitting send on accident all the time)

@Soulshine
A reminder that cool phones like @Fairphone still have an SD card slot in even their latest #Fairphone 5 model. #fp5

@dgar I keep nothing in the pinche cloud.

DELETED

@dgar
I could hear his voice reading that

@dgar And I want to keep a local backup thankyou.

@dgar that's me. I created folder on C:// that is named "Non_OneDrive" which I've put as a shortcut on the desktop and I'm putting all of my documents in this folder ๐Ÿ˜‚

@dgar This, so much. Itโ€™s the other factor besides the stupid TPM requirement for Windows 11 that made me decide itโ€™s time to leave Windows for Linux. If I wanted to be artificially constrained by my computer I would have a Mac.

Oliver Geer

@dgar It's not just a privacy/control issue. I've literally had programming students stuck because the compiler complained about their code being in a non-ASCII-named folder. File Explorer showed only ASCII in the file path.

The problem? The Documents folder was secretly inside OneDrive, and although it was called "Documents" everywhere in the UI, the real folder name in OneDrive was in Chinese (because of language settings).

And all along, nobody knew it was anything but a normal folder.

@dgar
I deleted OneDrive and lost hundreds of files that were automatically saved there. But I don't have OneDrive anymore.

@dgar yessssss! so unnecessary ... this pisses me off soooo much.

@dgar

Once there was a post about the percentage of first semester computer science students who do not know what a file manager is, or where files are stored, or what a file actually is.

@dgar Just last week I made sure I had local copies of everything in my OneDrive folder, deleted the data from OneDrive, then delated the OneDrive app from my computer.

We'll see if Microsoft sneaks it back onto my machine when I'm not looking.

Matthew Loxton

@dgar
I had to create a data folder in the Windows root directory to avoid OneDrive messing with database files while they were in use, and corrupting them.
So far that works, but I know at some point OneDrive will find my unsynched folder and mess up my database files

Hugo

@dgar glad iโ€™m not the only one with this issue.

DoomsdaysCW

@dgar Relatable content! Don't forget to backup to external hard drives.

@dgar

I get that **** all the time on my work computer (Linux at home)...they push and push and push. Then, employees have problems finding their data, network is down, O365 is not working, etc., etc., etc., when a meeting comes up.

Greg Harvey ๐ŸŒ

@dgar That was such a great show... ๐Ÿ˜‚

Old Man in the Shoe

@dgar Shit, I forgot seeing this when I was about to screenshot it... I opened Excel today, it detected I no longer pay for OneDrive and tried to delete local files that aren't in the cloud.

At least it asked, I might have been smart enough to say no.

ShredderFeeder

@dgar onedrive is a bad idea until they fully support endpoint encryption.

Sinza Contoso

@dgar I've had people complain about this at my previous job. I could only grumble in agreement.

@dgar

You can do what Microsoft wants and you can like it! Their one way is freedom, or something

jozefch

@dgar this bloatware is everywhere in M$ office, which i have to use in the work. Can't even save files to local by default anymore ๐Ÿคฎ

AskPippa๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ

@dgar I can't believe how aggressive OneDrive is in trying to get me to save to it. The option to save there keeps appearing, even after I turn things off. Sometimes you can click those by accident.

AskPippa๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ

@dgar What if you filled your OneDrive space? Like, if you put hundreds of copies of the same long movie there -- maybe it would be too full so you can't save anything there even accidentally?
