@tomharris I gotta admit I went to Wikipedia because for all I am a native speaker I am not very native and not much of a speaker. Wikipedia says:

"Schloss, formerly written Schloß, is the German term for a building similar to a château, palace, or manor house; or what in the United Kingdom would be known as a stately home or country house."

@Gargron Thanks! Guess I've been using it wrong -- I was taught in high school that Schloss is German for castle (and I was embarrassingly old before I really understood languages don't map 1-1 anyway)
