As an outsider, I have found both the British and German railways perfectly adequate with mostly good service. Granted, I have not done any daily commuting by rail in either country, only travelled while on vacation, and in recent years never in high season.
@tml @cstross @SteveJonesnono1 so. Having recently spent some time interrailing around Europe. Using the railways of 9 different countries, in 17 days. And having also grown up in the UK with British failways. I gotta say. None of them are perfect. Dutch and Swiss were least worst.
French don't understand how to make a timetable.
Spanish don't understand what a train is.
Italians are trying to be SNCF.
Maybe British rail isn't the worst in Europe. But it's certainly the most expensive.
