@aperalesf @yogthos I can’t believe how great that is. I made it to the video popup but then it said „not available in your country“ 😆

Horia Mut

@aperalesf @yogthos thank you for the laugh. And the eye-opening truth.

🦊 Paul Schoonhoven 🍉 🍋

@yogthos @edgeofeurope or use another browser...

And in case of websites I just move on to competition.

Jarjan

@yogthos
You may have missed: No, I don't want to provide feedback now...
😅😡
Can confirm the swearing...

Jarjan

@yogthos
I did an online course a little while back, I'll withhold the provider. But after every ffing little bit of content, almost every second sentence, I was asked to rate the content on a scale of 1 - 10 and give a comment. After I while I just gave 1's everywhere.

Kat the Leopardess

@yogthos This is why I question if the amount of ads and pop-ups pushes up against accessibility requirements

If you have to take all those measures to get to the info you were looking for, I can only imagine how detrimental it is to those who have ADHD/ADD and certain learning disabilities.

Robbie 🇧🇪 :tux:

@yogthos You forgot the "Chat with customer support" blocking the bottom right part of the site.

always tired (moved to chaos)

@deightonrobbie @yogthos And a pseudo accessibility thing blocked the left side of part of the article in a completely surely not distracting /s way.

Yogthos

@deightonrobbie lol yeah, with "customer support" being a chatbot

mkj

@yogthos 9. forget all about it and install an adblocker to make the Web actually usable again.

(At least we usually don't get a gazillion pop-up *windows* these days.)

Yogthos

@mkj yeah it's basically the only way to browse sanely nowadays

Vori

@yogthos I still can't believe there are people that don't use
1. uBlock Origin
2. Consent-O-Matic

Vertigo #$FF

@yogthos 9. Close the interactive "chat with a specialist" dialog.
10. Close the site anyway because you realize that it's all AI generated garbage.

vascorsd

@yogthos close the round popup bubble on the corner begging you to interact with the "new intelligent" assistant 😮‍💨

Yogthos

@vascorsd lol yeah, I can't wait until a major company has a data breach via prompt hacking 😆

Alan Langford

@yogthos somewhere in there is
a) find AI based chat icon
b) inspect the DOM for the icon
c) step up to the embedded iframe
d) create uBlock origin rule to make it go away forever
e) delete it from the DOM
f) return to the page

@yogthos how to use the web in 2024
1. install adblocker
2. install automatic cookie dismisser/accepter
3. change the default search engine from google to something else
4. add some filter lists to the adblocker
5. copy link to site
6. paste it into a thing that removes the useless info before reading it
7. do what you wanted to do.

David Chisnall (*Now with 50% more sarcasm!*)

@yogthos I prefer this flow:

1. Hit the 'reader mode button'
2. If that doesn't work, close the tab.

Auscandoc

@david_chisnall @yogthos I have reader mode as default… and selectively remove it for certain sites.

Pseudo Nym

@auscandoc @david_chisnall @yogthos

Wait, you can make reader mode default?

What witchery is this??

/Me goes to look through settings...

Lindworm

@yogthos
9. try to read 1 paragraph
10. click away interruptors

repeat from 9 every 10sec

Eowyn

@yogthos try Firefox reading mod +addons like I don't care about cookies

karussell

@yogthos You forgot close "Login with Google" and close chat window.

DELETED

@yogthos

Ah, this is the era of nostalgia. 🥲

Who here doesn't remember pop-ups, pop-unders, banners, and sparkling pointers?

All we need is a MIDI playing in the background, and we're back to the 90's.

grin

@yogthos why do you keep the AI assistant chat window and the survey sidebar?

Mourioche ⏚

@yogthos Faster :
- Close the window you just open
- Close the window "You may also be interested in ..." that trying to keep you when everything has been done to scare you away.

erik

@yogthos @aemarielle I worked in enterprise privacy compliance for 4 years. I recommend taking the extra time to deny all unnecessary cookies. You might be astounded by how much is being tracked and shared between companies as standard practice. However, I don’t remember how I got here, either.

Gero Stein

@erik @yogthos @aemarielle Yes, I‘m always surprised that the site owner and his 1749 partners take my privacy very serious and are so kind so ask for my permission 😬

erik

@tdr @yogthos @aemarielle The upside is a lot of companies have to comply with GDPR or CCPA (etc) laws for some portion of their users and it’s generally easier to build it in globally for everyone than to try applying rules region by region. If get the option to decline, you should take it.

Gero Stein

@erik @yogthos @aemarielle I know, it was also more of a swipe on how you actually want to respect my privacy when passing on the data to 1479 partners. 😉

Leeloo

@erik @tdr @yogthos @aemarielle
Clearly not enough companies have to comply with the GDPR, because 80% of those popups are not GDPR compliant. Which is still an improvement over a few years ago.

OtterMatic

@yogthos you missed the auto chat that covers the lower corner of the screen saying “Hi I’m Jones, a LLM masquerading as a human so that you can chat with me and I can provide literally no help regarding your current issue. How can I help you today”

DELETED

@yogthos At that point just use @mozilla Firefox with uBlock and Privacy Badger.

Steve

@yogthos disable adblocker so the cookie message displays and can be dismissed so that you can interact with the site (try bellroy[•]com)

Tim Ward ⭐🇪🇺🔶 #FBPE

@yogthos And if step 4 takes more than two clicks to "reject all" then I move on.

Tim Ward ⭐🇪🇺🔶 #FBPE

@yogthos ... and find that IT WON'T LET YOU BUY ANYTHING without creating yet another account with yet another fucking password to deal with.

Maven :neocat_flag_demigirl:

@yogthos@mas.to how to actually browse the web in 2024

1. install uBlock Origin
2. open site

Leeloo

@yogthos
I use an ad blocker, and any popups that remain get closed with ctrl-F4 / cmd-w.

Gloopsies :fedora:

@yogthos

Or use an ad blocker and be called a dirty pirate for doing so

Carolyn

@yogthos " try to remember why you opened the site in the first place" LOL! 😃

Robin Frost

@yogthos I laughed out loud I so did. It's not funny but so is because of how literally you captured this truth. Well-done friend.

dale

@yogthos for the past decade or so, I just close the tab at step 2

Leonid

@yogthos also be forced to deactivate the ad blocker or to leave the page..

Bluedepth

@yogthos @hannu_ikonen Press control-R for a few minutes until the site throws 429 errors. Then fantasize about a EMP killshot, the only thing that will save humanity from itself.

Mark Burton

@yogthos
Yes but I find the Consent-O-Matic Firefox add-on helps a lot. It remembers your cookie settings.
Might not work on mobile but I use the Iceraven fork (has to be installed manually).

Andres Jalinton

@yogthos
How to browse the web in 2000:

1. Ask for the phone line.
2. Connect the modem.
3. Connect to the ISP (x times, hope it works the 10th time)
4. Wait for the first byte to arrive by watching the monitors on your task manager to blink at the same time.
5. Open Internet Explorer / Netscape (Wait 3-5 minutes)
6. Ask for the phone not to be used (start again from 3).
7. Try to remember the website you wanted to visit.

Andres Jalinton

@yogthos
After visiting, remember removing all the toolbars that the site installed without asking. (Probably easier just to format the PC)

Alex Chaffee

@yogthos 9. as soon as you're doing the thing, get distracted by a popup chat window that blocks 1/10 of the page and **lies to your face** (a canned bot message pretending to be from a helpful customer service human)

(humane UI design principles are as dead as chivalry)

jjj

@yogthos All of this but also the annoying waiting time between each step, when the full content of the page should be able to load in the blink of an eye.

9. Dismiss the “how did we do?” survey request
10. Dismiss an ad
11. Search through 3 levels of the main menu and 6 submenus for something really obscure, like “what is the main office’s postal address”
12. Dismiss an ad
13. Dismiss the regular chat window
14. Dismiss the “AI Enhanced” chat window
15. Dismiss an ad
16. Say “screw it, I’ll just call the main office’s phone number and suffer through navigating the phone tree”
17. Having pushed #2 twice and other numbers three times, get told your question cannot be answered over the phone, please try the web site instead.

@yogthos God forbid you try to start instead with a search.

cognitively accessible math

@yogthos honestly, rather often at the first popup or maybe the second, I decide to X on outta there. May their data thusly record.

StaringAtClouds

@yogthos ... Close browser
Shut machine down
Use a 2nd machine to virus scan the disk just in case an unnamed internet search company, that also supplies ads, 'accidentally' served an ad with a virus in it ... again

Uwe_Kauffmann

@yogthos Someone who is on sides for stupid People, shut not wonder that he will be used as stupid people,

Close the "May I help you?" chat...or was that No.6...?
