We've actually released two features today that I'm really excited about. One is, as you may already know, displaying the author's fediverse account underneath link previews. But the other is showing a profile preview when you hover a user anywhere in the web app, with a quick follow shortcut.

@Gargron Both excellent additions, thank you!

@Gargron Sorry to complain but the profile preview on advanced web interface is ***really annoying** as the timelines jump in three columns so is there any way I can disable it?

Cecilia Mjausson Huster

@Gargron Really looking forward to the profile preview! So useful.

@Gargron I feel the timeout to display the profile preview is a tiny bit too long. The UX would probably feel better w/ 500ms less.

Eugen Rochko

This profile preview features the first two lines of the user's bio and the first two fields (commonly used for information like pronouns or verified links) which should hopefully make people more informed about who they talk to before they do so (similar idea as the reply prompts we launched a while back on Android).

As for fediverse accounts underneath link previews, for now this feature requires manual review from our side so that we can avoid the risk of malicious sites framing users as their authors, but we intend to build out a self-serve system to manage which sites you can be featured from very soon.

@Gargron I’m open to help with verification process for Turkish media organizations, journalists, and bloggers. (Also will email you for myself.)

@Gargron Ah, I missed that part. 😅 Oh, well... My blog theme will be ready when the times come! :D

@Gargron How come you didn’t leverage the rel-author system that eg. Google+ had in place? See mastodon.social/@voxpelli/1127

@Gargron I assume the plan is to just use the profile links for checking if a site can feature you in the preview? (like the opposite of link verification) If not, there is an idea on how to do it free of charge ;D

Eugen Rochko

@the_moep It will be a specialized list of domains where you are allowed to be featured from. I think it's a bad idea to reuse profile links for this because the intent would be incidental and their number is limited.

MHLoppy

@Gargron is that the long-term plan, or just the interim plan while it's being tested etc? The idea of the platform deciding who qualifies as "legit" seems really weird!?

@Gargron rather than an allowlist system, how about a blocklist system which individual people could self manage?

I.e. individuals could enable citations & notifications, and then any time a link preview generates a cite back to them, they'd receive the notification and if it's not a legit article, just tap to add that domain to their own blocklist which would in turn stop those previews from including the cite.

This would be more in keeping with the decentralisation goal, surely?

@Gargron congrats on the launch today. As a newsroom web developer who would like to see journalism embrace the fediverse I was glad to see this feature roll out in July. I added the meta tags to our article templates and sent an email to get manually verified on July 23 but so far themarkup.org is not on the allow list (example post: mastodon.social/@jonkeegan/112). I'll send follow-up email(s), but I am curious to know how many news sites are supported as of today?

@Gargron I love this so much. Providing easy access to context about how people present themselves feels extremely pro-social.

David Schmidt

@Gargron Maybe also interesting for hashtag?!

The bottom button would allow to follow the hashtag and above there would be room for stats how popular the hashtag is.

@Gargron The hover preview is nice, one of the few good uses of :hover. But why make it transparent? Seems pretty inaccessible for those who are not 100% at reading text. Whether due to neurodiversity or just age.

zunda

@Gargron Great to see the links to journalists' fediverse profiles! However, the profile previews for a hover are unfortunately too destructive to me. I accidentally unfollowed an account and decided to disable it: https://github.com/zunda/mastodon/commit/670f826. I wish the feature would at least be configurable by the user.

Eugen Rochko

@zundan I saw your posts the other day. The unfollow button was missing confirmation, this was unintentional and has since been fixed.

zunda

@Gargron Thank you! I'm afraid that the card is still too big hiding the timeline unexpectedly. I just can't see why it is wanted, not just on Mastodon but also on Twitter/X or Bluesky. I imagine there is something I just can't see there...

davecykl

@Gargron A feature that I would find very useful, please, would be if the app could recognise if a link in a post was actually a link to another Mastodon post, and if you followed the link it would go to the corresponding post (still in the app), rather than just treating it as a normal web link and opening a web browser. 😕

Reed Mideke

@Gargron Yay, been wishing for profile hover. Thanks mastodon team <3

rob

@Gargron both of these are very pleasing.

Matthias Schmidt

@Gargron Is there a way to disable this feature as a user? It really made the UI unusable for me. I am using a touchpad for scrolling and whenever I stop the actual content is blocked by the overlay.

Darnell Clayton :verified:

@Gargron One suggestion: include at least two #Fediverse accounts, one for the author and another for the federated site.

Example: More by @darnell@darnell.moe on @darnell@darnellclayton.com

This would give people the option of subscribing to the author, the site publication, or both.

@Gargron Please avoid devolving into Microsoft Outlook, which won’t even let us copy a user’s email address anymore without opening yet another dialog screen that also refuses to let us copy the shown email address unless we specifically press the copy button. They created 3 actions and a wait time for what could have been as simple as ctrl-c.

@greg @Flipboard

IMHO These are very interesting functions, especially for journalists on Mastodon.

I hope they will also be implemented and automated on :flipboard: Flipboard and flipboard.social as soon as possible.

In particular, the "byline" is decisive, to be allowed as soon as possible, obviously with all the precautions against abusers and with all possible controls, and if possible with a standard form to have the active function in all instances and social spaces of the Fediverse in which a journalist operates.

Thank you.

@Gargron The profile on link preview feature is excellent. Will it work with bridged accounts too (ie Bluesky accounts that are federated with Bridgy, or a similar software)? Thanks!
